My name is Alexander Graham Bell. On March 10, 1876, my associate, Thomas Watson, and I changed the world forever with a spectacular invention!

In the 1870s, it was difficult to communicate quickly and from a distance. I set out to try to find a solution to this problem. 

As a young boy, I became interested in sound and sound technology because my mother was deaf. Later in life, I married a woman who also had a hearing impairment. Meeting my wife furthered my interest in sound.

I began to develop a device that would allow sound to travel from one place to another. On March 10, 1876, I decided to finally test my invention with my friend, Thomas Watson. 

Mr. Watson, will you help me?

Yes, Alexander! I would love to!

Mr. Watson went into another room, which had another device I made. I sat down at the table and spoke these words into the device:

Mr. Watson, come here!

In the other room, Mr. Watson could hear me speak through the other device! It worked! I successfully invented the first working telephone!

I can hear you! It works!

Telephones look very different now than they did back in my day, but they have the same basic function- to communicate with others quickly and from a distance!
