Mrs. & Mr. Woodchuck

Billy Bearnstien-Woodchuck
To this family, open adoption to them means having their son be surrounded by loving parents and adults who want to support him and see him succeed. The Woodchuck family has come to the agreement to see Billy's birth mother on birthdays and holidays. For the rest of the year, an option for phone calls between Billy and his birth mom is allowed

They want to throw him an amazing birthday party to show how happy they are about their new family. This party is an attempt to bond as a family.

Our story begins on May 7th, where a big celebration is being planned. Billy is a child who entered the foster system at five years old. He has now been adopted by the Woodchuck family.
This will be the first birthday that Billy is spending with his new family, the Woodchucks. In an attempt to bring this new family together, Mr and Mrs Woodchuck have decided to have a dinner party with Billy's birth mother as a way to celebrate Billy turning seven.

Billy's perspective

"Soon mama will be here, I wonder how much longer? I wonder if she'll be happy to see me. I hope she loves the Woodchuck's like I do. Hopefully seeing me here does not make her sad."

Billy is waiting for the clock to hit 5 o'clock because his birth mother is coming for dinner to celebrate his birthday! It has been a while since Billy has seen his mother since moving in with the Woodchuck's
Billy is patiently sitting by the window when he sees a car pull into the driveway, and his mama gets out.

Mrs Woodchuck goes to answer the door. Billy is standing beside Mr Woodchuck; as the door opens, he catches a quick look at his Mama. She looks just like he remembered. He cracks a half-smile.
"Woah, she's really here" Billy thinks to himself.
The doorbell rings:"DING-DONG".
"Welcome to our home come on in"
It is time for dinner, the Woodchucks have prepared all of Billy's favourite food, pizza and chicken nuggets. There were three different kinds of pizza so everyone had some they liked.

"Yummy, I am so happy to be eating all my favourite foods with all my favourite people, thank you for this birthday dinner!" says Billy
Billy is so caught up in the celebration but cannot help but think to himself.
" I wonder if Mama is having a good time".
Billy starts telling a story about when his mama made him a homemade chocolate cake for his fifth birthday.

"Chocolate cake?? Another one of my favourites"
Mrs Woodchuck gets up from the table, and Mr Woodchuck helps clear the table. Mrs Woodchuck announces, "I think it's time for presents and dessert! I think I saw a yummy chocolate cake in the kitchen".
Billy's Mama, Mrs Bearnstien, gets up and gives her gift to Billy first. She says to him as she hands the gift over:

"Present time"

"I hope you love it, just a little something to remind you of our time together".

Billy tears up a little bit but is smiling from ear to ear.

I love it! I cannot believe you kept all this. Thank you Mama.

Billy rips open the wrapping paper and sees a red box. When he opens it, Billy finds many items like movie tickets and pictures from when he was young and toys from when he lived with his biological mom.

You're welcome Billy Boy
Mr and Mrs Woodchuck give Billy his gift next. As they are handing over the gift, they say:
Billy opens the gift bag to find a beavers tail that can be used as a flipper for Billy. He giggles and says:

"Hope this can help you feel more at home sweetie".

The flipper can be used when the Woodchucks go swimming.

I love it!

The Woodchucks are thrilled that Billy loved the gift. Billy is smiling and thanking his new parents for the funny and thoughtful gift but cannot help but think:

"How does Mama feel? ... should I feel bad for accepting the Woodchuck's gift?"

The celebration has come to an end, and Billy has had an amazing day. He has a lot of emotions and feelings about the days' events.
Billy thinks to himself:

" I am so happy that both Mama and the WoodChucks got to celebrate with me today, I just feel like part of me is betraying my Mama, but she looked so happy to be over, so maybe that is not the case. I also wonder what the Woodchucks thought of my Mama."

Billy continues to think, " Both of my presents were so nice. I loved them; the woodchucks are really making me feel welcome here. I hope Mama was not upset by the present they gave me."
Over all, Billy was happy to be reunited with his Mama in the safe setting of his new forever home.

Adoptive parents perspective
Mr. and Mrs. Woodchuck
They are interrupted by a knock at the door "Knock-Knock".

" I hope Mrs Bearnstien feels welcome in our home. I hope she is satisfied with what we can offer Billy."

" I wonder what she is going to be like; Billy has not talked too much about her, but I know he loves her, so I am hoping for the best."
Mr and Mrs Woodchuck gather in the kitchen, putting the last touches on the food before Billy's Mama is supposed to arrive.
Mrs Woodchucks goes to answer the door, and Mr Woodchuck stands beside Billy for emotional support.

Everyone is now in the entryway - Mrs Breanstien, Mr and Mrs Woodchucks and Billy. Mrs Woodchuck wants to make a good impression and hopes Billy is happy. Mr Woodchuck has similar curiosities about how it will go.

It's time for dinner

"Dinner time, featuring Billy's favourites, pizza and chicken nuggets. Lets all go sit down and enjoy!"

Their idea is to gift Billy a flipper that looked like a beavertail. This was a way to welcome him into the Woodchuck's family. They thought this was the perfect gift to show their true emotions about Billy's official adoption.
Integrating him into their family with open arms

Ever since the Woodchucks began planning Billy's birthday, they had a hard time thinking of the perfect gift they would ever give him. They thought long and hard and came up with a splendid idea.

He opens it up to see a flipper in the shape of a beaver tail and could not be happier to be apart of the Woodchuck family now.

Billy, you can use it to swim by the dam this summer!
Dinner has been cleaned up, and the candles on the cake have been blown out. Mr and Mrs Woodchuck give their gift to Billy.

I feel welcomed.
After dinner, cake and presents were done, the night came to an end. Mr and Mrs Woodchuck had some time to think about the birthday party that just happened.

I was worried, but in the end, it was a good evening that was the right choice for their new family dynamic and a perfect way to get to know Billy's birth mother.
I am so happy the night was such a hit and it looked like Billy had a good time too!
