One day, a bottle washed onshore at a beach containing a note and a map. A dog named Max found the bottle. The note leads to a secret treasure that was somewhere on the island. Max needed to solve an equation using P.E.M.D.A.S. to find it.

The Hunt to Order of Operations
By: Maddie McMahon

This story begins with a dog named Max. Max was laying on the beach one day when all of a sudden, a bottle with a note and a map washed onshore. He opened the bottle and read the note, it had a math equation on it.

P is easy, just climb the peak. If you want to find E you won't be able to breathe. Take the path that goes through the mist, there M will be. D is up on the tree, that hangs above the sea. A is hard, the apple on a tree that you can not see. To find S you have to run or else you might sink. After this, the treasure will appear, but it doesn't end here.
4^2+8(10x+6)=40
The note said that if the equation was solved using P.E.M.D.A.S. then the treasure would appear. P.E.M.D.A.S. is a term that we use when talking about an order of operations. This is used a lot in math when trying to solve either expressions or equations.

Max kept reading the note and realized that he had to follow the map to get the treasure, so that's what he did.
The first location was a mountain, Parenthesis Peak. Max needed to solve everything in parenthesis first. Max realized that before solving everything in parenthesis, he needed to distribute the 8 into the parenthesis.

Max multiplied the 8 into the 10x and the 6 and got 80x+48.
4^2+8(10x+6)=40
4^2+80x+48=40
Max knew that he needed to get rid of the parenthesis next because he couldn't finish the rest of the equation if he still had them.
Once Max was at the top of the mountain, he found the next clue. The clue said the next step was at Exponents Falls.

Exponents are any number that has a power that the number is being raised by. That number is multiplied by itself that many times.
Once Max arrived at Exponent Falls, he didn't see another clue there. He read the note to see where it might be. He realized the clue was in the water.

The next step was to get rid of all the exponents and this equation only had one exponent, 4^2.
4^2+80x+48=40
16+80x+48=40
The clue said the next stop is at Misty Multiplication.

Max, multiplied 4 by itself 2 times to get rid of the exponent.
Max arrived at Misty Multiplication and could barely see the next chest in front of him. He walked halfway through the rain until he came upon the next clue.
The clue said he needed to solve the next step of the equation for the next clue to appear.

Max needed to multiply the equation next but realized there was nothing that needed to be multiplied. The only time Max needed to multiply was when he was using the distributive property.
Max found the next clue which said to head to Tropical Division.

Once Max arrived at Tropical Division, he realized that he didn't have to do anything here either. The equation had no division in it. He found the next clue in the tallest palm tree.

The next clue led him to Apple Orchard Addition.
