After the defeat of the Spanish Armada
in 1588, the British were able to begin
colonizing the New World. The first
attempt to start a colony was Roanoke,
but it ended in failure. The colonists who
were left there disappeared without a
trace.

English noblemen wrote the
Magna Carta to limit the King's
powers and to protect their
basic rights or privileges. It
started the idea of unalienable
rights later in the world.

Jamestown was the first
successful colony in the
Americas. It survived off of
tobacco, a cash crop
created by John Rolfe to
save the colony.

In the Proclamation of 1763
declared that the people couldn't
settle past the Appalachian
Mountains because that was known
as Native American land However, if
you were a licensed fur trader you
were allowed in this area. The
colonists ignored this proclamation
and created conflicts with the
Native Americans.

the Sugar Act was a tax passed
on sugar and molasses in the
colonies. It was passed to help
pay debt for the Sevens Years
War and the French and Indian
War. It was also a use of
mercantilism.

Shortly before the Quartering Act
was passed the British government
passed the Stamp Act which placed
taxes on all documents and printed
goods. When the person payed for
the tax they received a stamp or
seal on their good. Most colonists
protested this act by not paying for
the tax.
