Today we are going to talk about something the floats, something that has no bones, and something that lives in deep water. Can you guess what it is? Great job, it's a jellyfish!
Jellyfish have been drifting on ocean currents for millions of years, long before dinosaurs existed. The jellylike species are abundant in cold and warm ocean water, deep water, and along coastlines, and pulse along with ocean currents. Jellyfish, despite their name, are not fish; they are invertebrates, or animals without backbones.
Jellyfish are attractive, but they can also be harmful. Jellyfish use stinging cells in their tentacles to shock or paralyze their prey before devouring it. Their mouth is an opening within their bell-shaped body. They eat and throw waste out of this hole.
Jellyfish eat many different types of things, such as small plants, copepods called larvae, they also eat the planktonic eggs and young stages of many different kinds of marine animals. Some jellyfish even eat other jellyfish!
Jellyfish are pushed forward as they squirt water from their mouths. Tentacles sting their prey as they hang down from the smooth baglike body
