My favourite period in interior design is rococo. It is an artistic period, present in interior design, in European art in the years 1720–1780.

Rococo was born in France at the end of the reign of Louis XIV. It was he who gave the interior of his palace a theatrical appearance.

Looking for something new and fresh, French artists focused on more intimate, sensual, light and casual forms. The Rococo interiors were dominated by exotic motifs, asymmetry and freedom of composition.

It soon spread to other parts of Europe, particularly northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Central Europe and Russia. It also came to influence the other arts, particularly sculpture, furniture, silverware and glassware, painting, music, and theater.

The name rococo comes from the ornament called rocaille - an asymmetrical decorative motif that resembles the edge of a shell or the mane of sea waves. Rocaille was used as an element of ornamental decorations.
