Winchester. Winchester was a worm
who really, truly loved the rain.
He loved the way it sounded on the top
of the grass, and the way it echoed all
the way down to his underground cave.

He loved the way it smelled. Oh, he couldn’t even find
words to describe the wonderful smell of rain! But most of
all, he loved how it felt to move in grass moistened by rain,
pavement puddled with rain, dirt muddied by rain.

Everything changed once touched by
rain.

One morning, while Winchester studied his dirt samples, he
heard the echo-y “plip” of rain on the far-above roof of his
home. . In his excitement, he threw aside his dirt samples,
not even caring that they spilled and mixed into the dirt of
his own home. He hurried up through his tunnels and at
last, poked his head out into the wet, cool rain.

In that moment, he was the rain.

A huge, crashing, thunderous boom interrupted
Winchester’s rain reverie. Winchester jumped in the air
with shock and became very alert. Not nervous or scared,
though. The rain emboldened him, made him a tough
warrior worm. He looked around him quickly to find the
source of the boom. In very little time, he discovered the
source.

A child was walking down the street, umbrella in hand.
Winchester had experienced feet before and knew them to
be his deadliest enemy. A single second under the right
part of a shoe was enough to be the end of a worm like
Winchester. So using all his skill and cunning, Winchester
slithered away back into the grass, where he would be safe.

While the child walked along, happily splashing in puddles,
the polka dot boots clumping up and down with glee,
Winchester watched jealously. Even these few minutes
away from his precious rainy puddles was hard for him.
He waited anxiously for the child to pass. Within another
minute, Winchester watched the polka dot boots go around
the corner, and back he sped to the sidewalk, gleefully
tossing about in the puddles.
