Here in Santander we are all very proud of our coastal area and our fine golden sand beaches.

Let us tell you about a local tradition that has been going on for some time now: 

                     LOS BAÑOS DE OLA

Historically and culturally, 

Santander has always been close to 

the sea and maritime activities.

In the last third of the 19th century the city began to become a tourist and leisure destination with the promotion of the Baños de Ola thanks to their therapeutic properties.

In the mid-nineteenth century  doctors encouraged members of the haute bourgeoisie, mainly from Madrid, to take sea baths. They started coming to the Sardinero Beach.

Santander turned  into a major resort in the north of Spain.

This seaside activity brought with it a big change in the social and cultural customs of the time. 

More tourists brought the construction of new buildings and infrastructure. 

The Sardinero area in particular became an important spot in Santander, especially in the summertime.
