Owen is 18 months old, and he loves to eat 

graham crackers!   The only thing he loves 

more than eating graham crackers is playing 

with his tractors.

One day, Owen decided to combine his two 

favorite things, so he went into the kitchen to 

get his own personal stash of graham crackers, 

but to his dismay, they had all 

been eaten!

Needless to say Owen was NOT very happy!

Owen decided to go in the living room and think about how many crackers he had to 

begin with and how many he had eaten.   He remembered that he started with 8 

crackers, but he had only eaten 4 of them.   What fraction of the crackers 

had Owen eaten?

If Owen started with 8 crackers, and he ate four 

then he would have 4 left.   The fraction amount is 4/8.  

You can also say he ate 1/2 of the crackers.

Owen was so upset he was beginning 

to see double!

He decided to go undercover to do some 

investigating.   He was determined to find out who 

ate his last four crackers!  

He walked through the house to look for clues.   He saw candy 

wrappers, empty water bottles, and a dirty fork, but no signs of 

any graham crackers!

He decided to think again about his crackers.  

If he had 8/8 crackers - 4/8 crackers how many crackers should 

he have left?
