You can have a moving profile picture on YouTube. Yes, it is possible to use a GIF as a profile picture on YouTube. How is this possible?

There is a way to have your profile picture as a GIF on YouTube.

You're probably wondering: How is this even possible? Because YouTube doesn't even allow you to do this. In its settings it says that you can use a PNG file or a GIF file but no animations.

So that means that your profile picture can't be moving.

So, let's begin. 😊 Basically, this all started when YouTube YT Battles tweeted me. They're pretty interesting YouTube channel - you should check them out. They're pretty epic.

Now they tweeted me showing that they got this in their notifications. Basically, someone had a GIF profile picture. How is that possible?

They said that: "If a profile picture is a gif, it will only be animated if it appears in your notifications. This only happens on browser notifications."

So this won't happen on your phone unfortunately. You have to do it on your computer. And this also won't

appear in the comment section or on your channel page, but it will appear in notifications.

So that's pretty cool, y'know? Why is that even a thing and how do we do it? Well from here I wanted to play around with it. What I did is I used an extra channel that I had. (I have a few weird random channels) I was just sitting there doing nothing. So I just used one and I uploaded a GIF profile picture.

I used this one. It is a different version of my logo, but instead of a white background, it's black, and the gear is moving so it's of course a GIF, you know. Otherwise, it wouldn't be moving. And so uploading this to YouTube's customization's settings, it's not moving and I even tried it out with the notification stuff by commenting on my

main account and replying with this account and it didn't show up. I was wondering: Did YouTube patch this? Was this not supposed to happen? Because it didn't work at all. Well, something that YT Battles actually found was that if you go into your Google brand account settings and change the profile picture there, it actually moves.
