Harriet Tubman

This story is about an American abolitionist named Harriet Tubman. Born into slavery, she had a dream that one day she would be free. Harriet escaped from slavery and helped many others.

Hello, my name is Harriet Tubman, but I was not born with that name. 

I was Araminta Ross and my nickname was "Minty".

I was born in 1822 in Maryland's Dorchester County.

I was born a slave.

When I was 12 years old, I was hit in the head with a rock.

I slept for many days and had visions and dreams of my freedom. When I woke up I vowed that one day I would be free. 

In 1844, I married the love of my life and changed my name to Harriet Tubman.

My first attempt to escape was in 1849, I was 27 years old. My two brothers and I ran for our freedom. My brothers were frightened and returned back, but I kept running.  

I followed the North Star and made it to a free state. 

I was finally free and my dream had come true.

From 1850 through 1860, I returned to Maryland 13 times and guided 60-70 family members into freedom.
