like the name says protons have a positive charge. they are found in the nucleus along with the neutron. since protons have a positive charge there needs to be a negative charge. that job goes to the electron.

each row of periods have the same number of electron shells.  each next element that is one proton less than the last one.  

groups 

groups are the vertical rows on the table. each group decides the valence electrons in each element. there are 18 groups on the table.

electrons are not part of the nucleus. It has a negative charge while the proton has a positive charge. valence electrons dictate reactivity.

the neutron is part of the nucleus. It has a neutral charge, and balances out the atom. The proton.

Alkali metals 

Alkali metals have metal like properties as the name says. They include elements like Li, Na, Rb. most of them are found naturally in compounds. but they can't be found in pure form, because they are too reactive.  

Alkaline earth metals

Alkaline earth metals are metals that found in earth. they include elements like Be, Mg, Ca. all alkaline earth metals have 2 valence electrons.
