Hi, I'm Harriet Tubman! I was born in 1822 in Maryland. I was born into slavery, and my parents named me Araminta when I was first born.
I lived as a slave for 22 years and was eventually married to a Freeman, named John Tubman in 1844. I changed my name when I was married, to Harriet, after my mom.
In 1849, my slave owner passed away. Before I could get sold, I ran away from Maryland to Pennsylvania. My husband was not able to make the journey with me so he stayed behind and eventually remarried.
After my escape, I just couldn't let my friends and family suffer under slavery anymore. So in 1850, I decided to return to Maryland to bring my people to safety under a free state. We called these routes to freedom the Underground Railroad.
Life on the Underground Railroad was tough. I was always looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was after us. There was even a warrant out for my arrest so I had to be extra careful we didn't get caught. Even though I was scared, I knew we were running from our life of slavery towards a better future.

For 10 years, I traveled the Underground Railroad. I went back to Maryland more than 13 times knowing my life was at risk. I did not care though, because on my dangerous missions I never lost a single person. I was given the nickname "Moses" because I lead so many people to freedom.
