November 21, 1620

My name is Elijah. I am 11 years old and 

today I am beginning my journey to America. 

My parents and I were forced onto a boat late 

last night, and we were told that we would be 

working in the New World. It is very dark and 

hot where we are staying, and there are many 

people all around us. I have no room to move, 

and I can barely breathe because the stench is 

so pungent. 

December 3, 1620

Today I was fortunate enough to walk on 

the ship deck for 10 minutes. It felt nice to 

breathe fresh air and see the waves, but 

after a few minutes it was back to the 

chains under the deck of the boat. We 

seem to be in the middle of nowhere, and I 

fear we may never reach land. I have not 

had food or water in days, and I am very 

tired.
