Preface:
It is well known that many children are given limited opportunities to interact with people who are different from them. This leads some children to have very skewed perspectives on topics like gender and masculinity, because what they do know is from their families and the media which can be very biased and teach incorrect information. From Emily Kane’s study The Gender Trap, it can be seen that parents welcome and praise gender nonconformity when it comes to daughters, but strongly discourage it when it comes to sons. This leads boys to have identity problems and avoid anything that might make them seem feminine, as seen in CJ Pascoe’s study Dude, You’re a Fag. In this study Pascoe showed that young boys associated the word “fag” with weakness or un-masculine males and did everything in their power to avoid it, including not expressing any emotion except for anger, convincing their friends that someone else was the “fag,” and in some cases even objectifying women. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to start a conversation about gender and masculinity for children, specifically boys, in order to challenge existing ideas about masculinity and prevent young boys from limiting their potential in order to fit these preexisting ideas.
Tommy was an average little boy who lived in a small household with his mom, dad, and sister.

Tommy went to an average sized elementary school with all sorts of different kids.

One day at school there was a new student named Johnny. Tommy took to notice Johnny and wanted to be his friend.

They started talking and found out they had a lot of things in common. Tommy went home and told his family about the new friend he had made at school.

The next day, Tommy went to school but noticed something different about Johnny. Johnny was wearing a skirt. Tommy thought only girls wore skirts and found it strange.

At recess, Johnny got picked on for it. Tommy just stood and noticed and didn't stand up for his new friend he had made.

After school was over, Tommy noticed Johnny had been crying. He felt bad but didn't want to speak up.
