Once upon a time at Island Trees School District in New York in 1976, lived some happy students. They were unhappy, however, after the school board did something against their rights…

This school board banned 11 books across ALL of the school libraries in the district!

The students were angered by this decision. What right did the school board have to take away their books?

The school board said that the books were "plain filthy". They were anti-American, against religions, among other things.

One student named Steven Pico, thought that this was very unfair.

Everyone has a set of rights, and one of these rights is the 1st Amendment. This states that you have the right to speech, the press (books and newspapers), religion, and other things.

Because Steven believed that the school board’s ban of the books violated this specific right.

He then sued the school board. Suing means taking legal action against a specific group or organization that you believe has taken away your rights by a certain action.

Think of it like a battle. Two sides are fighting against each other, with the goal to win something, whether that be land or money. In the end, the more powerful side wins, along with receving the land or money.
