In September, 1976, the Board of Education for the Island Trees Union Free School District received a complaint from a group of parents called the Parents of New York United.

We don't like some of these books. They are inappropriate and don't match with our values.
The Board of Education then removed the 9 specific books mentioned in the complaint in February, 1976.

We are going to review these books for educational value.
In response, Steven Pico and four other students filed a lawsuit against the Board of Education in a federal district court.

The Board of Education is not banning these books because they lack educational value. They are banning these books because they do not agree with the moral and political messages found in them.
The federal district court sided with the Board of Education without a formal trial

I agree with the Board of Education.

Steven Pico and the other students thought the federal district court's ruling was unfair, so they asked a United States Court of Appeals to look at their case.
The federal district court did not even give us a formal trial, even though we has our first amendment right to freedom of speech violated.

The federal court of appeals agreed with Steven Pico that the students deserved a formal trial and sided with the students.
These books should not be banned. The Board of Education did not provide a valid reason for banning them.
