A special thanks to my favorite and first teacher, my Grandpa, who always taught me that the most important things in life aren't things.

On Agnes’s birthday she would want everything new.
She would rip open her toys with no thank you.

On Halloween, Agnes would have fun.
But she wouldn’t listen to the rule saying please take one.

On Thanksgiving, Agnes did not give thanks or share.
One could say it was almost as if she didn’t care.

Then when Christmas came, she opened her eyes
and when she realized the true gift, she was beyond surprised.
“Before Christmas break “said Miss Tall “you know what I want you to do? I want you to find the best present ever according to you”

That day she ran home and told her mom all about her day.
She told her to make her project perfect everything had to go her way.

She wrote out a list and no one could top it.
A LOL Surprise, an iPad, some squishmallows, and even a Pop it.
Her mom looked at her list and told her they could go to the store.
She asked Agnes if this was right, and she said "definitely for sure".

Agnes got her iPad and loved her favorite game.
But something about it wasn’t just the same.

Agnes got her LOL Surprise the best doll, Queen Bee.
But she realized although she was fun to play with there was more for her to see.

Agnes got her squishmallows and thought they were okay.
But they weren’t the best because they didn't make her day.
Agnes got her Pop it and played for what felt like days.
But it wasn’t the best in many ways.
Agnes looked back at her list
She checked off what she had, was there something she missed?

She walked into the living room something had to be there.
There was her grandpa happily sitting in his chair.
Her grandpa was so nice.
Something she loved about him most was he gave the best advice.
“Grandpa I’m doing a project for school, and I think I’m a mess.
If you could have a present, what would you consider best?”

Grandpa smiled and said “Well when I was a boy...
I didn't own a toy.
I grew up delivering the news.
I had big holes in my shoes.”
“I dreamed to find gold and thought I could be rich
But as I got older, I realized this."
“I began to be with my family and friends.
We would have so much fun it would never end.."
I realized that I didn’t need to have gold.
when I had memories to treasure as I grew old."
