Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom,
lived a beautiful princess who loved to
garden. One day, while she was gardening,
she realized that none of her plants were
blooming. The wise old owl told her that her soil
was too acidic.
“What does acidic mean?” asked the
princess. “It means it contains properties
of an acid, and it's pH is below 7,” replied
the wise owl. He explained to the princess
that if she were to taste an acid, it would
have a sour, or sharp-taste to it. He then sent
her to the old cat to get seven mysterious
solutions, and told her to look for the most
neutral solution, and pour it on her plants.

When the princess got to the market, she found the cat
who gave her seven strange solutions. Suddenly, the
cat disappeared before the princess could ask any
questions. Feeling frustrated, she sat down and cried.
Suddenly the princess heard a strange noise, and a
fairy appeared!
“Why are you crying?” asked the fairy. “Well,” said the
princess, “I need to find out which solution is neutral,
and I don’t know how to do it!” The fairy calmed down
the little princess and pulled out 7 strips of red paper
and 7 strips of blue paper. “This is called litmus paper.”
explained the kind fairy. “The red litmus paper stays
red in an acid, but turns blue in a base, but the blue
paper turns red in an acid and stays blue in a base.”

“Use both papers in each solution so that you know for
sure which one is an acid, and which one is a base. If
it is a neutral solution, neither paper will change
colors.” said the fairy.
“But what is a base?” asked the confused princess.
The fairy replied, “A base has a pH greater than 7, if
you tasted it, it would taste bitter, and it feels
slippery, like soap." The fairy added, "A neutral
solution, the one you are looking for, has a pH of 7. ”
After that, the fairy flew away and the princess walked
back to her garden to test the solutions.

The princess lined up all of her mystery solutions, and
labeled them 1-7. She then put a red and blue litmus
paper in each cup. She watched carefully to see what
color each paper turned, and recorded all of her
findings on a chart. As she watched, she noticed that
the paper was changing color! In the first cup, the red
paper stayed red, but the blue paper turned red! She
knew that meant that the solution was an acid and
had a pH below 7. In the second cup, both papers
turned blue. She knew that meant it was a base. In
the third and fourth cup, both papers were red. On
her chart, she wrote that solutions 3 and 4 were
acids.

When the princess checked to see if the fifth solution
was an acid or a base, she noticed that neither of
the papers in the solution had changed colors. She
recorded her data on her chart. She then looked at
the litmus paper in solutions six and seven. She
noticed that both solutions had turned the red litmus
paper blue, and kept the blue litmus paper blue. She
knew that they must be bases. The princess looked
back at solution number five and remembered that
the fairy told her that if neither paper changes, it is
a neutral solution. The princess jumped with joy!!
She had found the neutral solution!!

The princess poured the neutral solution, with
a pH of 7, over her flowers and they began to
bloom! She was so excited that her flowers
had been saved.

To perform an experiment like the princess's you

Tee's Adventure

Once upon a time there lived a white t-shirt named
Tee. Tee lived in a village with other white t-shirts.
Everything in the village was either white or black,
including the houses, the grass, the sky, and even
the sun. Tee had read once about something called
“color.” He had never seen it, but was determined
to find color and bring it back to his village.

Tee decided to ask his best friend, Boxer, if he knew
anything about colors. Boxer confirmed that colors do
exist, and said that one way to bring them back to his
village was with chemical reactions. He told Tee that
there were four types of chemical reactions and that
Tee needed to go to Andalasia, a world with color, to
find out about all of the reactions. He told Tee that
while in Andalasia, he would meet a bird, mouse, tiger,
and pig. Each animal would tell him about a different
kind of chemical reaction. After he knows about all of
them, he can go see the grasshopper who will give him
what he needs to bring color home. He then took Tee to
the magical land called Andalasia.

Tee couldn’t believe his eyes! There was color everywhere!
Shortly after arriving, Tee saw a bird. He ran up to the bird
and asked if he knew what one of the chemical reactions is.
The bird smiled and said “Of course! There is a kind of
chemical reaction called synthesis. It is when two elements
combine to make one compound.” Tee was confused.
“What do you mean?” he asked. The bird took two
hydrogen atoms from a container and mixed them with one
oxygen atom. They combined to make water. The bird
explained that the two elements, hydrogen and oxygen,
combined to create a compound. This was a synthesis
reaction. Tee was so excited to learn about a chemical
reaction. He wrote it down in his journal and continued to
walk.
