I saw the red tailed hawk in person and I just thought it was an amazing bird. The red tailed hawk was the first hawk I learned about, so I thought it was a good animal to make a book about.
Physical Characteristics
The red tailed hawk has broad round wings, with a short round tail. The female is bigger than the male so you might mistake them as a eagle.

Food
The Red tailed hawk eat small mammals like rabbits, rats, voles, ground squirrels, and sadly cats. Its rare to see hawks eating cats, they only do that if they are hungry enough, its also because cats are larger than their normal small prey, so they will go after cats when they have the opportunity. I think its sad.
Habitat
Red tailed hawks live in open country, woodlands, prairie groves, mountains, plains, and roadsides. They pretty much live in the whole US.

Family
Every animal is in a family, and in that family is a group of animals that are a subspecies of one animal. So the Red tailed hawk is in the Accipitridae family, The Eastern red tailed hawk is a subspecies of the red tailed hawk. The Eastern red tailed hawk is a different species of the red tailed hawk. Confusing right?
