It all started in 1614 when English explorers sailed back to England,
along with some Patuxet indians that were meant for slavery. In 1620,
when they English society was forced to believe specific things even
though they did not want to and a group of Separatists, also known as
Pilgrims sailed to America in search of religious freedom.

Once Pilgrims arrived to America and settled in Massachusetts, they
went through a harsh winter with poor soil and low food supply. This
winter was also known as a mini ice-age and after this severe period of
time, only half of the pilgrims survived.

Squanto, a former slave of the british, that had managed to escape,
found the pilgrims and next to the other Wampanoag indians, taught
them how to fish, farm and survive in Massachusetts, thanks to this
help, they formed a relationship. Since Squanto could speak english,
they could communicate easily.

In the fall of 1621, the crops that the Wampanoag had helped them to
plant and farm were ready to harvest. Everyone says they had a 3 day
feast and celebrated their harvest, but this is not the end of our story.

For the Pilgrims of the next generations,
Thanksgiving day was very different from
how it was in 1621. It was really a holiday
celebrated to give thanks to God and pray.
This holiday descended from the Puritans,
who were another group of people who were
not agreeing with the English church.

Every year, the governor of each colony would announce Thanksgiving days when
they had big harvests and would achieve victory in a battle. For example, in a
battle against the Pequot, in which they triumphed, the church declared a
Thanksgiving day in honor to the victory.
