There once was a girl named Wen Shi.

She was the second of three children, 

all were daughters.

Her family lived by a river, the Xi River.

Wen Shi often went to the river so she 

could fish and wash clothes for her 

family.

One day, Wen Shi found a big, smooth 

and white stone near the river. She 

decided to take the beautiful, white 

stone home with her.

Wen Shi soon discovered that this 

wasn't really a stone, it was an egg. 

From the egg hatched five small, baby 

snakes.

Wen Shi and her family were poor, but 

Wen Shi saved the best food they had, 

and fed it to her snakes.

As her snakes grew, they helped her 

catch fish in the river. They were natural 

swimmers and soon were very good at 

catching fish.

Years passed, and Wen Shi's snakes 

soon became powerful dragons. 

Dragons are spirits of water, and can 

control the weather. Knowing this, Wen 

Shi asked her dragons to end her 

village's drought by summoning rain. 

Wen Shi's dragons gladly did as she 

asked.
