In the sunny city of San Francisco,

on a wide winding streetand stuck between two sky-scraping apartment buildings,there is a humongous house with many rooms.

Inside the house
there are four dogs,three cats,eight fish,two rabbits,a mommy,a daddy,six pink sisters,

and a little boy
named Jack.

In a very different
part of the city,

on a straight and narrow
boulevard, sits a cozy little
cottage with Jack’s tiny
grandma living inside.

And one Saturday a month,
when the dogs bark a little too
loudly, and the cats can’t stop
bothering the fish, and the rabbits
won’t leave their hutch, and Mommy is at work, and
Daddy is tending his rose bushes,
and the sisters are in their pretty
pink rooms painting each other’s
nails,

Jack’s grandma comes
to take him to the park.

So on every first Saturday,
as soon as he gets ready,
Jack sprints downstairs and
waits by the door (after Daddy
ties his shoes) for Grandma
to come pick him up.

But one day, after Jack
waited,


           and waited,


                             and waited,

Grandma never came.

Depressed, Jack went to
go talk to Daddy, who was
finishing pruning his roses.

Daddy, Grandma
never came!

Daddy frowned, and put away his clippers.

Jack, Grandma called earlier
on the phone. Didn’t Mommy
tell you? She’s sick, and
won’t be able to take you to
the park until next time.

So Jack, disappointed and worried about his

grandma, went back into his bedroom for the night.

Then, just as he was about to fall asleep,

he had an idea.

When he woke up in the morning, and the dogs were barking

much too loudly, and the fish were fed up with the cats bothering

them, and the rabbits had stayed in their hutch all day, and the

sisters have moved into the living room with their hair dryers, and

Mommy was watching her soaps, and Daddy kept polishing the

same spot on his car that Jack isn’t allowed to touch without

Daddy near,

Jack tied his shoes by himself and

decided that if Grandma can’t come

see him, he would go see

Grandma.

(He brought his favorite
ball, just in case.)

Jack planned to walk to Grandma’s, but once

he got outside and saw so many streets and

avenues and alleyways, he couldn’t remember

which way Grandma lived.

???

So he asked one of the shopkeepers how to get

there. The man scratched his chin and said,

I don’t know. Sorry, kid…
it’s too dangerous for you
to walk there by yourself.

So Jack walked a block to the bus stop, and decided to

take a bus to Grandma’s.
