This book is dedicated to Nyla and all the children I have had the pleasure to learn from and grow with as they moved through the developmental stages of early childhood.

Nyla is a four years old girl who loves to remind the adults in her life she is a big girl now. She is very independent and does not like receiving help from others unless she asks for it.
Nyla arrived at preschool with her boots on the wrong feet and shirt on backward. Her mother stated it was easier than fighting with her.
Nyla was proud to tell me she got dressed without mommy's help.
Nyla chose to join her friend Kennedy in the drama play area. The girls pretended they were in a hair salon Kennedy was the client, and Nyla the stylist. Nyla got a pair of scissors and cut Kennedy's hair. Kennedy began to cry and Nyla stated, "you said cut my hair cut."

The co-teacher asks Nyla to sit with her to play a picture matching card game. Nyla enjoys her one-on-one time with the teacher. She is able to find most of the matches because of her good memory.
Once the game ends Nyla goes to the computer. She watches The Three Littles Pigs story and is able to state what will happen next for each scene. She watches The Gingerbread Boy and tells the entire story from beginning to end. While laughing as the Gingerbread boy runs away from everyone chasing him.

During circle time, Nyla names the colors and shapes and counts to 20 without skipping any numbers. She can say and perform the hand gestures for the fingerplays 1,2 Bucket My Shoe and Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Most days, Nyla is a joyful child who gets excited quickly. Often the teachers have to remind her to use her inside voice, especially when she is playing.

Nyla is quite fond of puppets and usually initiates a puppet show with her friends. She always makes sure she leads the play and speaks the most.
