The Pilgrims sailed on a ship called the 

Mayflower on a journey from England. 

They were brave travelers! The Pilgrims 

landed in Plymouth after their long six-

week journey. The date was December 

11, 1620. 

After the Pilgrims arrived, the cold 

winter came! Even worse, the new land 

where they were living was strange to 

them, and nothing seemed familiar. The 

winter was long, cold, and very hard for 

the Pilgrims.

Luckily, the Pilgrims met nice friends 

called Indians, also called Native 

Americans. The Native Americans had 

been living on the new land for awhile so 

they were familiar with the land. They 

taught the Pilgrims new things about the 

land and also helped by supplying the 

Pilgrims with seeds and food so that they 

wouldn't go hungry!

One of the nice Native Americans was named 

Squanto. Squanto and his other Native 

American friends taught the Pilgrims about 

their new home, and gave them different 

skills they needed to survive in a strange, 

new land.

The Native Americans gave the Pilgrims 

seeds for corn and taught them how to 

grow food. The Native Americans also 

taught the Pilgrims how to hunt and fish 

and how to survive on their own.

After learning new skills from the Native 

Americans, the Pilgrims were able to grow big, 

healthy crops and make lots of food for their 

Thanksgiving feast!
