Amelia's parents did not have much money and times were hard. When Amelia's sister, Grace, was born in 1899, Amelia was sent to live with her grandparents.

It was at her grandparents' house that Amelia built a wooden track from the top of a woodshed. She rode down the track on a wooden crate, going up into the air and crashing down. Amelia said this experience was "just like flying," though it did leave her with bruises.

Amelia was a good student, who focused on her studies. After high school she went to a girls' school in Pennsylvania, called Ogontz school. During this time, she was inspired by women who had successful careers in areas that were normally filled by men.

Amelia ended up selling her plane to help her family, when her parents got divorced. However, she did not stay grounded for long. In 1928, she was asked to be a passenger on a cross-Atlantic flight. She became the first woman to cross the Atlantic in a plane.

Amelia bought a new plane and began flying again. In 1931, she married G.P. Putnam, who was her manager.

Amelia began preparing for her own cross-Atlantic flight. In 1932, she flew across the Atlantic Ocean, completing the longest and fastest nonstop flight in history at that time. She did encounter problems on the flight and had to land sooner than planned.
