It was the last day of school. Excitement filled the school’s halls as students spoke of their upcoming summer plans. Mia’s parents had planned on sending her to spend the first summer weekend with Auntie Pam in the countryside. Mia lived in a busy city and she always enjoyed spending time with Auntie Pam. The following week, she would be flying to Saint Martin to spend most of the summer holidays with her cousin. She was very excited about both visits.
The night before her trip to the countryside, she could hardly sleep. She dreamt of the nearby river where she went river tubing in the past. She could picture herself floating in the clear water. Who could forget her trusted companions Kelroy and Gloria? They always added spice to her visit. Kelroy and Gloria are Auntie Pam’s children.
The following morning, Mia bolted out of her room and ran downstairs. The smell of mum’s delicious brownies blanketed the air. Mum would always bake brownies for Auntie Pam. Auntie Pam had a stall by the roadside where she sold delicious treats.
A few hours later, Mia’s parents drove her to Auntie Pam’s house. The trip was long and Mia fell asleep on the backseat. Once they arrived, the smell of the surrounding forest awakened her senses. She jumped from her nap and joyfully flung the car door open.
Standing outside the plywood house were her loved ones. Their faces were glowing. Mia ran to greet her relatives. After she had settled down, her parents left for the city. Kelroy, Gloria and Mia decided to spend the night in the living room. Mia told Kelroy and Gloria many stories of the city and life at her school. They also shared stories of their school. The time came when the children lost the battle to the sleep, which was quickly taking over their bodies.
Bampppp! The three children flew from their mattresses and looked at each other in shock. They ran to the window and to their surprise, Ma Joe’s yard was a bucket of skittles. The children looked in wonder. They could not say a word. The strange lights disappeared right before their eyes. They quickly ran upstairs to tell Auntie Pam what they had seen. She told them that they just had a bad dream and they should return to bed.
The next day, they went to the river, but could not get the strange lights out of their minds. For the first time, Mia did not enjoy a river bath. The children made a plan to stay up that night to see if anything would happen. Mia’s mum had lent her a camera, so she was sure that she would get some proof. Auntie Pam would see for herself.
That night they patiently awaited a recurrence. Once again, the strange lights appeared. As soon as Mia reached out to grab her camera from the side table, the power went out. Auntie Pam rushed downstairs to make sure that the children were okay. They told her what had just transpired, but once again, she did not believe them. This made them feel downhearted.
The following day they awoke to the sound of Auntie Pam and Ma Joe’s voices. Ma Joe was about to leave for the city. She had been invited to her son's birthday party. Since she would be gone for two days, she asked Auntie Pam to take care of her cat. The children overheard her telling Auntie Pam , that she should not allow them to visit her backyard.
They were overjoyed. This time they would surely solve the mystery.
