In August, Smoggy the Froggy and his family moved
to a pond in New York City.

After a few days in his new home, Smoggy decided
to explore the big city.

While exploring, Smoggy saw lots of buildings and
cars but only a few animals. The only animals he
saw were birds.

Smoggy wondered why there were not very many
animals but didn’t have time to investigate. It was
starting to get dark so he decided to go back home.

On the way home, Smoggy noticed a large wall in a
river near his house. He decided that when he got
home, he would ask his parents about it.

“Dad,
what is
the grey
wall in
the river
for?”
Smoggy
asked
during
dinner.

“That creates hydroelectric power,” responded
his dad. “Water that flows through it spins a
turbine that creates electricity."

"This is a very reliable source of power because the
water never runs out and it doesn’t hurt the Earth," said
Smoggy's dad. “That is so cool!” said Smoggy.

For the rest of the night, Smoggy and his dad talked
about hydroelectric power. Soon, it was time for
Smoggy to go to bed. The next day was his first day of
school and he needed to get a good night’s sleep.

The next
morning, Smoggy
woke up feeling
excited. He
couldn’t wait to
meet his teacher
and new friends!
After eating
breakfast, getting
dressed, and
brushing his
teeth, Smoggy
got in the car
with his mom and
rode to school.

“Welcome to
Jefferson
Elementary School,
I’m Mr. Felix,” said
Smoggy’s teacher
as he entered the
classroom. Mr. Felix
promised that
Smoggy and his
friends would have
a great year in
second grade.
Smoggy was
thrilled to have
such an awesome
goat as a teacher!

After meeting Mr. Felix, Smoggy’s mom and left to go to
work. “Don’t forget, you have to walk home today,” said
Smoggy’s mom. Although he had practiced before with
his parents, this was Smoggy’s first time walking home
alone from school.

Smoggy had a
great day at
school. He got
to know his
classmates,
did math and
reading
worksheets,
and tried out
the new
playground at
Jefferson
Elementary.

At 3:30,
the bell
rang.
Smoggy
left school
and began
his walk
home.

On his walk, Smoggy decided to explore the city a little
bit more. He saw buildings and cars that he had not
seen before. Smoggy noticed a lot of black smoke
coming from many of the buildings.

He noticed that the smoke came from cars and
trucks as well. “This must be scaring off the
animals!” said Smoggy.

Soon,
Smoggy
began to
cough.

Smoggy’s cough got worse. The longer he stayed out,
the more he coughed. Smoggy decided to head back
home.

Once he got home, Smoggy talked to his parents about
his cough. “I got a cough while exploring New York City
on the way home from school. I don’t know what
caused it,” said Smoggy. “Let’s go to the doctor to get
you checked out,” responded his mom.

The doctor took a look at Smoggy. “I know what the
problem is,” she said. “Pollution in the air is causing
your cough. You can go to school tomorrow but try to
stay away from the black smoke. It can make you very
sick!”

Smoggy was very worried about the black smoke.
He did not want other people to get sick too!
Smoggy wondered what he could do to decrease the
amount of pollution in the air.

At school the next day, Smoggy
decided to ask his teacher what
he could do to help with the
pollution.

Smoggy asked, “Mr. Felix what can I do to help reduce
pollution in the city?” “That is an excellent question! I
will talk to the whole class about ways to get rid of
pollution,” said Mr. Felix.

Mr. Felix told the class that pollution could be reduced in
small ways and big ways. Small things that Smoggy and
his classmates could do included turning off lights when
leaving a room and riding a bike short distances.
