It was a beautiful Saturday morning. Dave, Sarah, John, and
Anna are on their way to the park with their dog, Sparky. Every
Saturday, the family goes to the local park. Dave and Sarah sit
on the bench talking, while brother and sister John and Anna
walk the dog.
Today was like any other Saturday morning. After
playing in the park they all go home and stop for ice cream
along the way. On the car ride home, John and Anna talk about
how they want to be detectives.
“I want to be just like Sherlock Holmes when I grow
up,” John said.
“Me too!” Anna exclaimed.
“We think it’s great that you both want to be
detectives. Maybe you two can work together just like Sherlock
Holmes and his partner Watson,” Dave replied
“That’s a great idea Dad!” they both exclaimed.

When they returned home from the park, John and Anna
went into their room, while Dave sat on the couch to
watch TV, and Sarah went into the kitchen to make
lunch for the family. Dave and Sarah let Sparky play in
the yard while she made lunch. Twenty minutes later,
lunch was ready. After finishing up lunch, John went to
go check on Sparky, and to give him his lunch. When
John went outside, he couldn't find Sparky.
Sparky! Sparky! Where are you? It’s time for
lunch!" John yelled. John looked throughout the entire
yard, but he could not find Sparky. John ran inside and
yelled to his parents
“Mom, Dad, I can’t find Sparky! I looked everywhere
but he’s gone. We have to find him!”

Anna replied, “I’ll help you look for Sparky. We can
be just like Holmes and Watson.”
“I think that’s a great idea. Me and you will make
really good detectives.” John said.
“Well lets get started!” Anna exclaimed.
John and Anna were now going to be detectives.
They ran up to their rooms to gather what they
needed to become real detectives.

“I have my notebook to record clues, and snacks for
when we get hungry,” John said.
“That sounds great John,” Anna replied. They were
both getting ready to leave when John asked Anna a
question.
“Hey, Anna I have a question for you,” John said.
Ok, what’s your question, John?” Anna replied.
“Why have you been sneaking dog treats, and giving
them to Sparky, without asking mom or dad first?”
John said.

“How did you know that?” Anna said with a startled look
on her face.
“I just know things like that, I see you give him treats
when you think nobody is looking. Remember when
Mom gave me some extra cookies with desert last week.
That was because I found her sweater that had been
missing for a month. She gave me the extra cookies
because I’m a great detective.” John replied.
“Please don’t tell Mom or Dad. Lets just find Sparky,”
Anna said.
“I won’t,” John said

First, John and Anna decided to check the yard. “This is
the scene of the crime. Let’s look for clues,” John said.
John and Anna spread out and searched the yard. The
yard did not look different. Everything seemed to be the
same. Sarah’s vegetable garden was untouched, as
were her flowers. John’s football was still there, as was
Anna’s soccer ball. Even Sparky’s bone was there, right
where he left it.
“I have found an important clue!” John yelled across
the yard. “I know how Sparky got out of the yard.” John
said.
“How?” Anna replied happily.
“Look at the back of Mom’s vegetable garden. There is
a small but noticeable hole that runs under the fence.
Sparky or somebody must have dug a hole under the
fence, so that he could escape.” John replied, looking
pleased with himself.

“Wow! Great job!” Anna exclaimed.
“Now that we know, we can start to investigate. I think we
should check the dog park, the pond, and all over the
neighborhood.” John said.
“Sounds good to me!” Anna replied, eager to start
investigating.
John and Anna walk to the dog park. It’s empty. There are no
dogs. They both look around anyway, searching for any
possible clues. There are many paw prints, and even an old
chewed up dog toy. The toy does not belong to Sparky. They
both seem disappointed until,
“I’ve found something! Its Sparky’s collar!” Anna yelled. And
there was Sparky’s dark green collar, right there in the bushes
next to the park. “This means that he’s been here. Someone
must have taken off his collar, and taken him! Let’s keep
looking, we have to find Sparky” said Anna.
