Aa is for Amendment


Amendments are a written change to the Constitution.
Amendments are not common, in fact there have only been 27
since the Constitution came into effect. The most famous
amendments are the first 10, the Bill of Rights.


Bb is for the Bill of Rights.

Changes that are made to the Constitution are called
amendments.Ten important amendments were made to
the constitution to protect the rights of the people. These
were called the Bill of Rights.


Cc
is for the
Constitution.
The constitution tells how the government
of the United States will be run. All of the
laws in the United States have to agree
with the constitution.




Dd
is for the
Declaration of
Independence
.

The people who lived in the 13 colonies decided that
they did not want to be ruled by England anymore, so
they wrote the Declaration of Independence. It said that
they had the right to be free and independent states.


Ee is for the
Executive Branch.



The Executive
Branch is one of
three branches of
our government.
It makes sure
that all the laws
are obeyed. The
president rules
the executive
branch.

Ff is for
Free Elections

Free elections are used to pick leaders in
the United States. They have two
important characteristics. In free elections
people need to be able to vote privately
and have a choice of candidates.



Gg is for Greek


The first Democracy was established in Athens, Greece.
Democracy in Greece, when it first started, was different
than the way we are familiar with it. They voted to make
decisions, but only certain people were allowed to vote.
Only free men got the opportunity to vote in Greece.




The House of Representatives is a part of the legislative
branch of government. They work with the Senate to make
the laws that people follow everyday. The people who are
part if the House of Representatives all represent a certain
state. States with more people in them have more
representatives in the House.

Ii is for
Independence Day.

Independence day was first
celebrated on July 4, 1776.
It is also called the Forth of
July. On this day people
celebrate how America
became separate from
England by signing the
Declaration of
Independence.



Jj is
for the
Judicial
Branch.


The judicial branch is one of the three
branches of government in the United
States. It is in charge of deciding
exactly what the laws mean. The
judicial branch is made up of judges
and courts.



Kk
is for
King


The first American colonists
decided to form the United States
of America after declaring
Independence from King George
III and Great Britain. The people
did not like that the king had all
of the power. This lead them to
developing a democratic
government where power was in
the hands of many individuals,
not just one.



Ll is for
laws.



Laws are like rules for the cities, states, and the
country. They tell us what is and is not allowed.
Laws are made by Congress, approved by the
President, and enforced by the courts.


Mm
is for Magna Carta

The Magna Carta is a
document written in
England in 1215. It was
the first document to
guarantee the right of a
civilian from a king.
Many ideas in the
Constitution came from
the Magna Carta. It
provided the framework
to the democratic ideas in
the Constitution today.



The United State's national anthem is The Star Spangled
Banner. The song was originally written as a poem during a
battle. Now, it is sung to honor the nation that we live in.
Nn is for the National Anthem


Oo is for the Oval
Office

The Oval Office is the office for the President. The Oval
Office is in the west wing of the White House. The
President does most of his work in the Oval Office. He also
frequently uses this room when addressing the nation on
TV.


Pp is for Political
Parties

The United States has two dominating political parties.
These two parties are the Democratic party and the
Republican party. Each part has a set of morals and ideas
that they support. People running for office usually run
under their chosen political party, but they don't have to.
