There are many different ways to catch tuna. Here are the four main ways.
1) Rod & Reel
2) Surface Trolling
3) Long Line Fishing
4) Net Fishing (Purse Seine)

#1 Rod & Reel fishing
One popular way to tuna fish is using a fishing rod and reel. This method is commonly used for sport fishing. Fishermen will pick a spot to fish and set out their lines. When waiting they will throw chucks of bait fish in the ocean to attract tuna. This is called chumming. Once a tuna bites, the drag starts to scream and the fisherman will start to reel in the fish. After the fisherman gets the fish to the boat someone else throws a harpoon at the fish so it doesn't swim away. The final step is putting a rope around the tail to secure the fish to the boat.

#2 Surface Trolling
Surface trolling is another popular way to catch tuna. A trolling boat has multiple outriggers, poles and lines attached. These drag lures across the ocean surface at a speed of about 4-7 miles per hour.

#3 long line fishing
Long line fishing is mainly used for tuna fishing but can be used for lots of other species of fish. With long line fishing, a rope is set out that can run for several miles below the ocean. This line will have other short lines attached to it with baited hooks to catch the tuna. These lines will have different lengths and will have floats to maintain the same depth. The tuna fish are reeled in by winding up the main line and removing any caught fish from the hooks. Then the line is set again and the process continues.
