Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto,Canada. He is a Singer-songwriter and record producer.

Abel is the only child of his parents.after his birth his parents divorced so he was brought up by his mother and grandmother.Tesfaye has an estranged relationship with his father. 

When Abel was 17, he dropped out of school and moved to an apartment with two friends. the trio would shoplift food from a nearby supermarket to survive. 

He admitted to  spending nights in jail when he was about 18. At the same time he began writing songs.

In August 2009, Tesfaye began anonymously releasing music on YouTube. He uploaded several songs to YouTube under the hidden username "xoxxxoooxo".His popularity grew exponentially after they were posted to the blog of famouse Canadian rapper Drake.  

 Tesfaye made his first public appearance as The Weeknd in a Toronto nightclub and soon  he founded the XO record label.

When Abel decided to be called The Weekend, there was already a band in Canada called that. But since he was already going by The Weekend, he simply decided to keep the name, and just drop the last e to avoid any issues.
