Day and night occur when the Earth rotates on it's
axis. (The Earth's axis is an imaginary line that
extends from the North to the South Pole and it's
tilted 23.5 degrees.) This rotation last about 24 hours.
The side that is facing the sun receives the most light
so it's day and the opposite side
of the Earth is night because it's
facing away from the sun.

5

The reason that seasons occur is because of the
Earth's revolution and tilt. (The Earth's revolution
is the motion of the Earth around the sun.) A comp-
lete orbit takes about a year. Between each season
there is about 3 months in difference. When the
Northern Hemisphere is facing the sun it is Summer
and while this is happening it's Winter in the South-
ern Hemisphere.

The lunar cycle is a cycle of the phases of the moon.
There are 8 moon phases as shown in the picture on the
next page. The names and order of the lunar phases are
new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full
moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent.
Waxing means more light is being illuminated and waning
means less light is being illuminated. Crescent means
about one fourth is illuminated and gibbous means about
three-fourths is illuminated.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes
between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully
blocks the Sun. This can only happen during a New
Moon but it doesn't happen every month. When the
solar eclipse occurs the Moon may look like the size
of the Sun but its not. It's because the Moon is closer
to the Earth then the Sun. Not understanding the
relationship between the earth, sun, and moon,
ancient people would sometimes confuse solar eclipses
with the supernatural.
