A a

A is for adapting which means to adjust.
Animals will live in places that are made right
for them. For example, animals will live in the
temperature and weather they like, or because
of the other types of animals they want to
interact with. Sometimes the environment they
are in is not perfect so the animals have to
adapt to live and survive in that certain area.
For example, polar bears have a thick fur now
because of the extremely cold weather they
live in.

B b

B is for biome which is a large piece of land
with similar characteristics. Biomes have
similar weather conditions, soil, and organisms
like plants and animals. Plants and animals
adapt to live in their own biome. Some
examples of different biomes are the prairies,
wetlands, the tundra, deserts, and grasslands.

C c

C is for climate which is the average type of
weather that occurs in a certain area. Weather
can be different everyday but climate does not
change for a long time. Different habitats and
parts of the world have different types of
climates. For example, Miami, Florida has a
tropical and hot climate because for most of
the year it is hot and it has been that way for
thousands of years.

Dd

D is for desert which is a type of biome. A
desert is known for being extremely hot, but
deserts can also be very cold. For example,
Antarctica is the largest desert in the world but
it is not hot, it is extremely cold. What makes
a desert is its extremely dry weather because
it hardly ever rains. In deserts it will only rain
about 16 inches in an entire year!
Since it does not rain a lot it causes dry soil
and makes it hard for many plants and animals
to live in this type of habitat.

Ee

E is for endangered animals which are
animals that are low in numbers and could
possibly become extinct. If an animal were to
become extinct it would mean that animal no
longer exists anymore because there are no
more alive anymore. Many animals have
become endangered because humans have
destroyed there habitats and there home. For
example, the Northern Spotted Owl is now an
endangered species because humans keep
tearing down its home.

Ff

F is for forest which is a habitat for many
different types of animals. Some animals that
live in this habitat are skunks, foxes, and
raccoons. This habitat consist of mainly
different types of trees. Some trees have
leaves which change color and fall. There are
also evergreen trees which stay the same year
round. Forest are also known for their very rich
soil, which is why forest have more plants than
deserts, which have very dry soil.

G g

G is for Grasslands which is a specific type of
habitat. Grasslands are normally windy and have a
dry climate. Because of the dry climate these
animals have learned to adapt to this habitat by
learning to live with little water at times.
Grassland's typically do not have many trees but a
large land of grasses. Because of the amount of
grass, grazing animals are common. Grazing
animals are animals that mainly eat plants like
grass. Since there are not many trees to use for
protection and shelter, many animals that live in
this habitat live underground to escape the cold
and for protection like prairie dogs and gophers.

H h

H is for habitat which is a place in the
environment where plants, animals, and
organism call home. It is where that animal,
plant, or organism can live comfortably. A
habitat is different for each animal, plant, or
organism. For example, a lizard's habitat is
somewhere warm and a polar bear's is
somewhere cold, but if they switch places they
will not live long or comfortably because that is
not the type of habitat for that animal.

Ii

I is for insects which are very tiny animals
that live in many different habitats. Insects
usually have a tiny body and six legs and
sometimes two antennas. There are over 6
million types of different insects. Although
people sometimes find insects to be annoying
they are very important to the habitat they live
in. For example, in forest since there are a lot
of plants insects are necessary to keep them
alive by continuing the process of pollination.

Jj

J is for jungles which is a habitat with land
that has a lot of plants. Jungles are found in
tropical warm areas where there is
precipitation and sunlight. Jungles typically
have a lot of tangled plants on the ground
which is why it is necessary that the sunlight
can be seen through the taller trees. Without
the sunlight, the plants on the ground would
no longer be able to survive in that habitat.

Kk

K is for kelp forest which is type of habitat that can
be found in the ocean. Kelp forest are areas
underwater with large amounts of kelp. Kelp is
another word for large seaweed.
Kelp forest are found in the more shallow parts of
the ocean. Typically fish and other creatures that
cannot live on land will live in a kelp forest, such as
seals and shrimp. Overfishing in kelp forest is
becoming a problem because fishermen are taking
away the carnivores that eat the herbivores, and the
herbivores are eating too much kelp, which could
possibly make it endangered in the future.

Ll

L is for land which is what humans and air
breathing animals walk on every day. Land is
any part of the earths surface that is not
covered in water. Some habitats do not have
land like the ocean. However, some habitats
consists of land and small bodies of water like
a pond or a lake.

Mm

M is for mountains which is a type of habitat
that can be found in different parts all over the
world. Mountain are part of land that are
elevated creating a very steep hill. The type of
weather and animals that live on mountains
change depending on how high up it is on the
mountain. Snow leopards are an example of an
animal that have made mountains their habitat.
Snow leopards can survive in mountains
because they are strong enough to climb and
run through the steep hills and can stand the
cold when up high on the mountain.

Nn

N is for niche which is something everything
in a habitat has. A niche is the role that every
individual animal or plant has. In every
habitat, there is a purpose for every plant an
animal that lives there which the purpose
would be their niche. For example, the niche of
a bumble bee is to pollinate flowers and to
create honey.

Oo

O is for ocean which is a large biome that
consist of many different types of habitats for
many different animals. The deeper in the
ocean you go you will find different sea
creatures and vegetation than in the shallow
water. The temperature of the ocean and the
animals are different for different places
around the world. There are different names
for the different parts of the ocean. There is
the Atlantic Ocean , Pacific Ocean, Indian
Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and the Antarctic Ocean.

Pp

P is for prairies which is a biome that is
sometimes used the same as grasslands.
Prairies and grasslands are the same type of
habitat just can be called either or. Prairies
have grasses that have adapted to the dry
environment that it has. The animals that live
on the prairie have also adapted. Since there is
no where to hide since there are no trees,
animals like the coyote can just run from
danger while animals like a ferret just burrow
underground.

Q is for quaking bogs which is part of the
biome called the wetlands. A bog is a wetland
covered in a layer of old plants, that looks like
a green coating. A quaking bog is a bog that
has water underneath and shakes when a
person steps on it almost feeling like a water-
bed.

Rr

R is for rain forest which is a habitat very
similar to a jungle. The difference between a
rain forest and a jungle is that rain forest do
not have as much plants on the ground. Rain
forest do not have as much plants on the
ground because rain forest do not have as
much sunlight shining through the trees as
jungles do so the plants on the ground cannot
grow. The tall trees also help protect the
animals and smaller plants closer to the
ground by protecting it from wind and keeping
the warmth inside at night.
