On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, my parents sat me down on the couch to talk. I thought I forgot to put my dishes in the dishwasher, or didn’t put my clothing in the washing machine, but I never would have guessed the first thing that came out of their mouths. “We are moving to Hong Kong.”

That night I tossed and turned in bed. Moving meant that I would be leaving my home, school, friends, and starting a new life somewhere else.

With all my personal belongings packed in a small suitcase, I walked through the airport to gate C21.

After the long 16-hour flight, we finally arrived in Hong Kong. I ran off the plane, excited, but scared about what my new life would be.

Arriving at the new house was exciting. “Which bedroom was going to be mine?” “Would I have room for my special reading corner?”

Even though I loved the new house, it didn’t feel the same. I just wanted to go home.

It was my first day at my new school. The day started strangely as my mom told me I would have to wear a uniform. I had never worn a uniform before.

Walking down the halls, I thought I blended in with the rest of the students because we all wore the same uniform, but the way they stared at me told me otherwise.

“Good Morning class!” My new teacher exclaimed, “This is our new student Alexis who moved all the way from New York to join us. Everyone give her a warm welcome.”

“Come sit with us,” the girls I made eye contact with in the hallway whispered. We exchanged names, shared some laughs, and then the teacher started her lesson.

“What in the world was she writing on the board?” I thought to myself. The girls at my table seemed to be writing notes easily. Tia, the girl who sat next to me, asked if I needed any help. My face told her the answer. Tia started to explain, “In Chinese-” “In Chinese!” I interrupted. I had never even heard the word Chinese before.

When the bell rang to go home, I ran out the door expecting to tell my mom all about my day. I couldn't wait to Facetime my old friends in New York.

“Wait up!” my new friends yelled to me as I got into my mom’s car. It didn’t take much convincing to get my mom to allow them to come over and play.
