The little girl went to visit her Papa before moving to America. She told her Papa that she was nervous to go to school in America because she could not read or write in English.

Papa took his little granddaughter to their favorite place to talk and said, "Let's play our grocery store game."

The little girl was excited to go to their favorite place and play their game.

"I went to the grocery store and bought 'A' for apples."

"I went to the grocery store and bought 'A' for apples and 'B' for bananas."

Papa and his granddaughter went through the whole game, all the way to the letter Z.

The little girl asked, "What am I going to do about not being able to read and write in English before starting school?"

Papa said, "From playing our grocery store game, I can see that you already know the letters and sounds." The little girl sighed, "But I do not know how to read the letters when they are next to each other."

"Accuracy is where you need to begin."

"Accuracy? What is accuracy?"

Papa explained, "Accuracy is knowing the relationship between letters and sounds. Since you know the letters and sounds, now you can decode the words accurately within text and understand what you read."

Sounding hopeful, the little girl said, "Can you show me what you mean?" Papa happily said, " Of course I can. I just happen to have a book with me." Papa began to read the book and and showed his granddaughter how to decode words as he read. The little girl watched and listened.

Papa handed the book to his granddaughter and said, "It's your turn." The little girl took the book and began to read and then exclaimed, "I did it! I can read!" Papa proudly said, "Yes, you did. I am very proud of you."

Night time had come. Papa and his granddaughter decided to camp out at their favorite place.
