Rhody and Lou lived on Oscar McCoy's farm. The mules had worked with farmer McCoy for many seasons.  

The mules were dark brown with a black stripe from their heads to their tails. Rhody weighed 890 pounds and Lou weighed 910 pounds.

The mules worked the fields with farmer McCoy.  They plowed the fields for planting and pulled the great wagon full of cotton to the barn.

One day farmer McCoy needed some lumber to build a new shed. He hitched up Rhody and Lou to the wagon and headed to the lumber mill on the Rocky River.

When they arrived at the lumber mill, Mr. Griffin was attempting to haul a large forest pine tree from the river bank to the mill. Mr. Griffin hooked up his two large draft horses to the huge log. His horses weighed 1600 pounds each!  

With the long reins in his hands Mr. Griffin shouted "Giddy up" to the horses.  The horses struggled as each one pulled with all it's might.  As big as those draft horses were they could not budge the huge log!

Mr. Griffin told farmer McCoy he would just have to leave that huge pine log at the river because it was too big to move.  Mr. Griffin unhitched the tired horses to return to the lumber mill.

Farmer McCoy quietly hitched up Rhody and Lou and told those mules to pull! Rhody and Lou pulled together. Farmer McCoy said "Gee" and both mules pulled to the right. Farmer McCoy said "Haw" and both mules pulled to the left. He repeated the commands until finally the giant log budged!
