Jackson was a happy little fifth grader, who was very
excited because he was getting his trumpet today! The
entire grade was going to be getting their instruments
and start to learn how to play. Jackson had a plan.

He was going to practice, and practice, and
become the best trumpet player in the school.
He didn’t need anybody’s help.

All the other students went down to get their
instruments first. The saxophones, the flutes, the
drums, and finally the trumpets. Jackson was very
excited, but he was also a bit nervous because
this was a big new thing for him to try. But he
knew he would be fine.

All the trumpet players went down to get their
trumpets. It was hard to hold the trumpet at
first, but eventually Jackson got the hang of it.
The hardest part for everyone was actually
playing the trumpet. They could barely get out
a sound! But that’s ok, thought Jackson.

After the first day or so, the other kids were
beginning to play more and more and get
better. But Jackson was still struggling to
play. He could get out a few notes, but it
wasn’t nearly as loud or clear as the other
kids. Jackson was afraid that he was going to
be left behind. But, he still would follow his
plan.

Jackson kept practicing and practicing, but he
just couldn’t get it. He considered quitting, but
his mom talked to him.
“Jackson, you don’t have to do this all on your
own. If you talk to your teacher, maybe she
can help you.”
Jackson didn’t like this idea though. He
thought it would be too embarrassing.
