Can you imagine life without french fries? Potatoes are very popular today. They are the fourth most important crop in the world, after wheat, rice, and corn. But in the past, potatoes were not always popular. People in Europe started to eat them only 200 years ago.
In 1500s
The Spaniards traveled to South America in search of gold. The Spaniards brought potatoes back to Europe. But Europeans don't like this strange vegetable because they think that if you eat potatoes The skin will look like potato skin. So they eat the leaves instead. The potato flower was once the most expensive flower because Louis XVI's consort, Marie Antoinette, wore potato flowers in her hair.
