I dedicate this book to every parent who has come to the United States, from another country, hoping to give their children a better future. To my mom who has gone above and beyond to always make sure I had everything while also always being there for me.

¡Hola! My name is María and this is my kitten, Bella. We want to take you on a trip to show you a little of our Mexican traditions. We think they each are special and we want to share them with you. My parents are from Mexico so I get to enjoy all the fun of their different traditions.

From November 1st through the 2nd, we celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. During these days, my parents set up an altar to remember our deceased family members. We put their pictures in these alters with candles, the food they liked, and flowers. I love celebrating our family that has passed away because they are special to me.
Another important holiday is our independence day. We celebrate it on September 16. It is important because it was when Mexico gained its freedom. We have a huge celebration in which we all gather around in our town at midnight and do El Grito de Dolores. We then continue celebrating with food, dancing, and music. It is so much fun!

Semana Santa, which means Holy week, is another important event for us. It is celebrated during Easter week and we usually take off from work or school to go to the beach or spend time together as a family. I enjoy spending time with my family and getting to go to the beach to swim too!

Christmas is also a special time for us. We have posadas that represent the journey of Mary and Joseph before Jesus was born. Posadas are celebrations in which we go from a private home to another private home asking for "shelter" as Mary and Joseph did. This is done through a song, but then we get to eat, listen to music, and enjoy each other's company. My favorite part of this is hitting the piñata and trying to get lots of candies.

Our Christmas is celebrated on Christmas eve. All of our family gathers on December 24th and we eat, dance, and play games. When midnight hits we all give each other hugs and tell each other Merry Christmas. We are then able to open our Christmas gifts and continue celebrating. I like getting Christmas gifts from my parents.
