Cane Confidence

Written by MacKenzie Milford

My name is Eve. I live a normal life like a normal girl. But there is something you might notice about me

I have a cane because I can't see very well.

My momma calls it my magic cane.
She says it has some kind of powers.

I'm not sure if I believe her. I am 8-years old after all!

Momma drops me off at school and Kiersten greets me at the door.

She helps me cross the street and walk inside the school.

Kiersten says, "Let's go sit down!" She reaches her arm out to me so I can hold onto it and we walk to class together.

Most of my class speaks to me by saying my name. This way I know that they are talking to me.

"Hi Eve!" I hear Emily say to me. I can tell it's her by the way her voice squeaks at the end of her sentences.

"What's up Eve?" Danny calls from the back of the room. He has the deepest voice in the class.

""
I knew that voice anywhere. That was Willow's voice.
I hear a scoff from the front of the room. I already knew who it was coming from.

"Why do you need to use that thing anyway?" Willow snarks.

"I can't see very well so it helps me..." I say in a shy and quiet voice.

""
I knew that voice anywhere. That was Willow's voice.

"Well it's getting in the way of me walking so you should just get rid of it."

Willow pushes past me and I start to wobble. I felt so embarrassed. I did not know what to do.

I walk right out of the classroom and into the hallway, my cane leading the way in front of me.

The cane bumps into the lockers.
It really does get in the way. I didn't know it bothered everyone.

I lift the cane in my hand and throw it down onto the hard floor.

"I don't want to use my cane anymore!" I exclaim.
I hear clanging on the ground in front of me, then the sound comes to a stop.

I start to walk away when I heard a strange sound coming from the ground...

A WHOOSH fills my ears and I hear a voice that I have never heard before, right in front of me!

"I'm your magic cane!"

"This can't be real," I first thought to myself. Magic canes don't exist! Right? Momma can't be right. She couldn't be.
"What is going on?!" I finally say out loud.

"I am here to help you.
Why did you throw me down?"
