Pictures/Props

Anchor- I chose the anchor because an anchor holds
things in place and they do not let loose right away.
Morrie is close to his death, yet he does not seem like
he is too perturbed. Most of the time, for someone who
is close to their death and they actually know it; they
would be kind of prudent. Morrie seems to appear as a
free-spirited, supportive, and considerate man. I think
that he has completed his own mistakes in life, as we all
do, but I think that he is someone who knew how to
learn from them. I believe that if everyone, or just
more people grew up to be like Morrie, that society
especially, would be a better place in general.

Chain links- I chose chain links that are colorful because in the
beginning, Morrie and Mitch seem like they have a very close
student-teacher relationship. They are very diverse than many
average people in society today. That is why the links are
colorful- because they are different from normal chain links just
like Morrie and Mitch are different than most people now a days.
Throughout the beginning of the book, Mitch is receiving a lot of
advice from Morrie about his own life lessons. It is like hit and
miss. Morrie made the mistakes, and Mitch is learning incredible
lessons from them. This book I would have to say is one of the
best I have ever read. Now a days, people are lackadaisical and
lazy. They make a mistake, and they could care less whether
they make it again, no matter how massive the affect on anyone
is. I really, honestly, believe that this book is a helpful source to
life.

Sea turtle- I chose a sea turtle because they are so calm. In
the sea, they are one of the most hunted creatures by other
sea animals. They know that their time will soon come. In the
story, Morrie understands that he soon is going to perish.
Even though, he is more serene than a fish swimming in the
shallow waters of Jamaica. He realizes that he has lived his
life and now all he wants is to share his life stories and one of
a kind life lessons with Mitch. Normally, when someone
actually knows that they are about to die, they freak out
majorly or lose control of what is going to happen. Morrie is
completely content and understands that there is nothing that
he can possibly do in order to slow or stop death from
occurring. I would act the same as Morrie just because I
believe that everyone is born to die. And also, it is the truth;
people die at one point or another no matter what.

Woodpecker- I chose the woodpecker because woodpeckers
are highly annoying, and when they peck at a trees wood, they
do not stop. Their sound is really irritating, and us people, can
not stop it. When Mitch sees his favorite professor, not to
mention, the one he has not seen in sixteen years; he was
talking on the phone. While talking on the phone, he lies to
Morrie and states that he was looking for his keys. I
personally believe that Mitch is being kind of ignorant. If I
have not seen someone in forever, I would cherish the
moments that I have with them. Kind of like Mitch and his
uncle. His uncle passed away, and the way it sounds, Mitch
did not cherish the moments he had with him. I think the
theme just for this part in the story is to cherish the things
that you have in life, because once they are gone, they are
gone forever.

Surfboard- I chose a surfboard to describe one of
Morrie’s amazing personality characteristics; free-
spirited. As it smoothly glides across the crystal
blue, 30 foot water waves, it reminds me of how
Morrie is such a content person, and how he takes
life easily even through the struggles. I know that
personally, I have never read a book that has
allowed me to feel so deeply changed by what a
character has gone through. He makes me look
deeper into my life, and realize how it really is
amazing compared to his.

Open book- I chose an open book to describe
Morrie when he is opening up to Mr. Koppel. I say
that because a book tells a story, just like Morrie is
telling a story. He wants to open up to Koppel and
reveal everything he wants before he passes. He
also explains how when friends and family visit
him, it makes him emotional yet elated because he
is so absolutely thankful for the people who
respected him and helped him through his rough
times, just as well as the good.

Doves- I chose doves to symbolize the first thing
that Morrie teaches in his life lessons class. I think
that two doves symbolizes love because they are
very graceful and content. Once two doves mate
or meet their match, they never have another. If
one passes, the other will stay alone until their
lifetime is over as well. They are like humans
when they are getting married. They are devoted
to one another. That is showing love; one of the
things that Morrie is teaching.

Shovel- I chose a shovel to symbolize the second
thing that Morrie teaches in his life lessons class.
Work. I think that a shovel completely explains
and symbolizes work. When you are digging holes
or doing whatever you do with a shovel, you
clearly are doing work. When I think of a shovel I
think of men working in the fields on a hot summer
day, sweating because they are digging and other
things for a living.

Bonfire- I chose a bonfire with people sitting all
around it to represent Morrie’s third subject for his
class. Community care. A bonfire reminds me of
all kinds of people getting along, relaxing, singing,
and spending time with others. Just making the
most of their life that night, not worrying about
what is going to happen tomorrow. I can see a
community coming together, having a bonfire on
the beach, just playing games or singing songs
around the circle. I believe that having a loving
and courageous community is very important.

Strawberry bush- I chose a strawberry bush to represent
Morrie’s fourth subject for his class. Family. I believe
choosing a strawberry bush is very unique. I personally think
that a healthy family should be affectionate, boisterous, and
trustworthy. When you’re with your family, you should be
able to say and do anything you want and be yourself without
feeling uncomfortable. As a child, you obviously grow up with
your siblings and your guardian. When you are a strawberry,
you are growing on the bush with the others. You are growing
up with the others, not knowing whether they are going to
turn out good, bad, large, or small. Just like when you are
growing up with your family.

Mold- I chose mold as Morrie’s fifth subject he teaches
in his class; aging. I chose mold because when it ages
or grows, it appears to look more vile and it can be
catastrophic. When you age, you appear to not look as
presentable as you used to. Before mold grows, it looks
mainly normal. When it starts growing, it looks worse
as it grows. Just like us humans. You also seem to get
more health issues as you grow older. You can get
disorders and diseases and sicknesses. Just like mold
can be toxic and dangerous to us humans.

Hug- I chose a hug as Morrie’s sixth subject he
teaches in his class. I chose a hug because when
people forgive each other, they normally give each
other a hug or something around those lines. I
believe that forgiveness is one of the most
important things in life. No one is perfect and
everyone makes mistakes. Every one in life has to
be forgiven and must forgive someone else. I
think that forgiveness is a very important lesson
for Morrie to teach Mitch.

Drowning person- I chose a drowning person as Morrie’s
seventh subject that he teaches in his class. I chose a
drowning person because for some reason all I can
imagine when I hear the word death, is drowning. It
seems like one of the most painful ways to die. Just
because you know you are about to die but there is
nothing you can do about it. You are trying to breathe
so hard, but no matter what you do, you just can’t. It
seems like one of the worst ways to die, so that is why I
always think of it whenever I hear death. I also think
that it makes it easier to remember that one of the
subjects Morrie teaches is death.

Shark- I chose a shark as Morrie’s eighth subject that he
teaches in his class. Fear. I have a fear of the ocean
just because I hate sharks. As unlikely as it probably is,
I feel that if I even step foot in the ocean, I will be part
of a shark attack. According to nationalgeographic.com,
there are only 50-70 shark attacks a year. How I think
of it is that is 50-70 people alone. dying because of
sharks. That is a lot of people who should not die
because they have done nothing wrong. When Morrie
teaches fear, I can see him explaining how to get over a
serious fear.

Heart Machine- I chose a heart machine to symbolize
Morrie’s death. He was Mitch’s favorite professor, then
he died. Morrie meant a lot to Mitch. When you see a
heart machine go flat, everything hits you. That person
that you always loved/liked, is gone. Just gone.
Forever. You can not take anything back, and most
people would not know how Mitch felt. Most people are
not at the hospital when their loved passes.

Questions

In the book it says, “No books were required, yet
many topics were covered, including love, work,
community, family, aging, forgiveness, and, finally,
death.” (p. 1) Why do you think that all the topics
in this quote are all euphonic, except the last one?
Do you think that someone is preparing for death?
Or do you not think anything at all, and it is just a
list of things Mitch is going to learn? Explain.

Morrie is preparing to be heard on a t.v. talk show.
If you were in Mitch’s shoes, how would you react
to seeing Morrie on a t.v. show? Some say that if
they were in Mitch’s shoes, that they would feel
abandoned or excluded from Morrie’s life and mind.
Some say that they wouldn’t mind at all. How
would you feel and react? Why?

If you were in Morrie’s shoes right now, what
would you want? Morrie states that he wants to
see his friends and family for his last moments.
What would you want if you were in his position?

As you may know, Morrie is close to his death and
may be close to losing his speech. He is receiving
an abundance of letters from around the world. He
is choosing to respond back, so how would you
respond? Would you get help from your loved
ones, or would you just do it yourself? Would it
make a difference? If you were the one receiving
his response, would you only want it to be Morrie’s
personal letter? Why?

In the story Tuesdays with Morrie, Morrie is a
professor. One of the important people that he
teaches is Mitch. A student whom he has known
for a very long time, who learns about fear, greed,
society, love, work, community, family, aging,
forgiveness, death, and other things that can teach
you important lessons in life. If you were the one
of the Major characters in this book like Morrie,
what kinds of things would you teach your student
who would be like Mitch? Why would you teach
these things? Would you choose to teach the same
things as Morrie? Why or why not?

As I have been reading this book, it has kind of
made me realize how good my life is. I can see
what Morrie has all gone through in his life and
how now he is trying to teach Mitch his lessons so
he does not follow in his footsteps. In your life,
have there been any mistakes that you have made
that you wish you could tell other people so that
they did not make the same mistakes as you?

Throughout the book I have realized that Morrie
has had a tough life. He has gone through a lot to
get to where he is today. Now he is trying to help
society. He worked in a mental hospital and tried to
befriend people who needed help and now he is a
professor who teaches life lessons. If you had the
chance to have someone like Morrie in your life,
would you want them to stay? Would you want to
know what you should and should not do? What to
watch out for and what the consequences for some
things are? If you do or don’t, why or why not?

Morrie ends up dying in the end. Mitch loses his
favorite professor that he saw every Tuesday. If
you were in Mitch's shoes, would you feel like there
was any un-settled business with Morrie? Would
you feel like there was something that you may not
have gotten to say to him? Anything you did not
have enough time for?

Connections

I have a connection to this is… that for the first
8 pages “Tuesday’s with Morrie” had to do with
Mitch’s perspective on Morrie’s past life, what
happened. A connection I had to this was that
I have reflected on people from long ago, I
know people that have past, and everyone has
lost a favorite family member that had a big
impression on them, and so this is a
connection that almost anyone can have,
anyone has usually reflected on someone that
they had lost.

“Tuesday’s with Morrie” is… so far about Mitch’s
reflection on Morrie and how, he promised to keep
in touch, but as soon as he leaves he never stays
in touch with Morrie, and after college his world
goes upside down, this is a connection that anyone
can have. Keeping promises can be tough, and as
an end result, it can lead to consequences, and
sometimes it can be a great reason as to why to
keep or not to keep them.

I think that as a connection Mitch is realizing how
he made a mistake by not keeping in touch, and
that he should have. As a connection I’m sure
everyone has made mistakes before, keeping in
touch, lost promises, not remembering something.
I think that a lesson and a connection to Mitch is
that he has learned that he should have kept
contact with everyone, and as a lesson something
will always remind Mitch of Morrie that he would
see everyday.

Another thing about “Tuesdays with Morrie” is that
Mitch is reflecting on how, he should’ve been
visiting and calling Morrie more often, because
soon he will probably pass away. And this is a
connection that anyone could have, so if someone
thinks back on life, they always have regrets about
how they should have handled a situation
differently, and more kindly.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie: is
how when Mitch goes to Paris to cover stories, and
the life the people live, a connection is how I have
also had to go places, and evaluate people and see
how they do things differently and write about it.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie: is
how when Mitch goes to visit, Morrie when he isn’t
doing so well, he brings him food, as a gift and an
act of kindness. I have done this type of thing as
well, a favor to a friend, and it is an icebreaker,
because we both enjoy whatever the other person
brings, and it helps us to melt into a more
understandable conversation, and we both
understand each other opinions.

A connection I have to “Tuesday’s with Morrie” is
that Mitch needs to start realizing that visiting
Morrie is like a therapy session, and it only helps
him see things more clearly. I’m pretty sure that
everyone has been grounded at least once, and
although they don’t like the punishment, it helps to
teach them a lesson, as to how they should react
differently, or think things through in a different
perspective.

Another connection I have to “Tuesdays with
Morrie” is when Morrie talks about trying to keep
self-pitying on a certain level, meaning you can’t
go any more than the amount given. I think this
helps relate to people having certain freedom, and
responsibility, like if they do the chores they can go
to the football game, give and take.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
that I have been interviewed before, and I can
understand how at first people are uncomfortable,
and nervous, but the next they are completely
comfortable, and they feel at home.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
that I have been interviewed before, and I can
understand how at first people are uncomfortable,
and nervous, but the next they are completely
comfortable, and they feel at home.

A connection to “Tuesday’s with Morrie” is that.
(1.) Everyone will die, and we all know it, but we
just don’t believe it. (2.) That everyone has written
a nice letter to someone, from an act of kindness
from breaking you next door neighbor's window, to
writing an email to a teacher about homework. We
have all done this at one point in time and in the
story Morrie is writing back feedback to his fans,
who have a connection to someone with or that
has ALS, and that life shouldn’t be taken too
seriously.

Another connection I have to “Tuesdays with
Morrie” is when Mitch and Morrie talk about family.
At least once in life, someone you know perhaps
not a family member, was not staying in touch, or
you were not keeping in touch with them, because
some people say, “I’ll keep in touch” sometimes
that does not happen, and that is what happened
with Mitch and his family,(mom, dad, older sister,
and younger brother).

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
about how Morrie is having a coughing fit, and he
needs help. Everyone has had to have a bit of help
once in their life, have you ever helped someone in
a time of need?

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
when Morrie had finally lost the battle of doing
anything for himself, so he had to have his wife,
and helpers help him, this can connect to anyone
that has a grandma or grandpa because
sometimes they need help, with anything from
eating, to helping find their shoes.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
when Morrie is teaching Mitch that it isn’t always
bad to listen to others, and their feelings, and how
to try and help them, even if you have problems of
your own. And I think this helps to show and teach
others how you need to work, and this can relate
to anyone, and at one point and life you have to
think of someone else and their feelings, and how
they could improve, or avoid feeling like that.

Another connection you could have to “Tuesdays
with Morrie” is when the author keeps bringing up
the O.J Simpson case, and when certain things
were happening, and what changed in between
those two time periods, and anyone can relate to
this because at some point in time they reflect on a
certain event and the progress its making whether
it be a case, or something else like learning
progress, you can always reflect and look at some
kind of progress.

A connection to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is when,
Morrie’s father was shot, because he liked to read
the newspaper by a dark non-populated area, and
he was mugged and killed, and a connection to this
is that, you hear about these kinds of things in the
newspapers, and on the news about tragic
accidents like this.

is that, you hear about these kinds of things in the

A connection to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is that
everyone has seen people together, as a couple, or
a group of close friends, and they see how they are
so similar, and in this case this connects to
Charlotte and Morrie, and life’s lesson about family,
love, and its importance.

A connection I have to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
when Mitch talks about celebrities who had ALS,
and I think everyone has frequently seen and
heard such things.

Another connection to “Tuesdays with Morrie” is
when Morrie talks about the ocean and how there
was a wave. And this can relate to anyone because
sometimes people make such a big deal about
nothing, like if someone spills something where
they were sitting, sometimes people make a big
deal about it, they start getting mad, and start
throwing a temper tantrum about nothing really.

In the end the, the last connection/lesson to make
was “too late”. And this talks about how Mitch, is
finally trying to connect to his brother, and a
connection to this is that, family is very important.
And that every person at some point in time,
misses someone that they once knew, or had not
contacted in a long time.

Quotes

“No grades were given, but there were oral
exams each week. You were expected to
respond to question, and you were expected to
pose questions of your own.” “Although no
final exam was given, you were expected to
produce one long paper on what was learned.
That paper is presented here. The last class of
my old professor's life had only one student. I
was the student.” (pg 7,8.)

“I stopped renting. I started buying. I bought a
house on a hill. I bought cars. I invested in
stocks and built a portfolio. I was cranked to
the fifth gear, and everything I did, I did on a
deadline. I exercised like a demon. I drove my
car at breakneck speed. I had made more
money than I had ever figured to see.”

“In March 1995, a limousine carrying Ted
Koppel, the host of “Nightline” pulled up to
Morrie’s house in West Newton,
Massachusetts.”

“You’re one of the good ones, Mitch, don’t
change that.” I nodded. And that was the last
time I saw Morrie, and after that he wasn’t
doing all that well although he acted as though
nothing had ever happened.”

“As Connie took the plates away, I noticed a
stack of newspapers that had obviously been
read before I got there. You bother keeping up
with the news, I added. “Yes.” Morrie added,
“Do you think that’s strange?”

“As I readied to go, I mentioned this idea to
Morrie. “We’re Tuesday people,” He said.
Tuesday people, I repeated.”

Flashback~ “ I don’t know. I just didn’t have a
lot to say. “Oh, I think you had quite a lot to
say. In fact, Mitch, you remind me of someone
I used to know, who I also know liked keeping
secrets to themselves.” Who? “Me.””

“... I thought about all the people I knew who
spent many of their waking hour pitying
themselves. How useful it would be to put a
limit on self-pity. Just a few tearful minutes,
then on with the day.”

“The “Nightline” show had done a follow-up of
Morrie partly because of the reception, for the
first show had been so strong. This time, when
the cameramen and producers came through
the door, they already felt like family.” Page
72. “His voice cracked. “‘... because I was so
lonely...’” “Morrie,” Koppel said, “that was
seventy-years ago your mother died. The pain
still goes on? “‘You bet.” Morrie said softly.”

“We both looked out the window. “Is it today
little birdy? Is it today?” Said Morrie.” “”What’s
the next one?” From a lady whose mom died,
she says that it was very nice to have
someone openly talk about it, and that she
was overwhelming herself with things and that
you helped change that.”

““You have a brother just like I did."" Just like
you did" I said. "See its better to be with, than
without, because alone I probably wouldn't
have been able to go through this." Morrie
looked at the window again. For the last time
that Tuesday.”

““Morrie was having another coughing fit, it
grew louder, and louder, and louder. Finally
when his fit left he took a minute to catch his
breath.” “Are you ok? What should I do?” He
replied. “Just give me a minute.””
