Komani had been a fighter since his birth. He had beaten his twin sister out of his mother by mere seconds. Once, when Komani was only seven, he took his father's hunting knife to his school and captured a rabbit. Then he killed it and tried to do what he had seen his father do, cut off the rabbit's fur and divide it's meat. But this ended in a bloody mess that crazed the boys and scared the girls to death.
Since then, Mr. Koi had kept his hunting tools far out of reach from Komani. But Komani didn't need them to show his superiority in school. He wrestled with almost every
boy at school and had beaten every one of them. All of the rebellious girls loved him. They especially loved the way his eyes shone yellow once he was really angry.
The only girl that disproved of him was Tatiana, his twin sister. Tatiana was beautiful and strong. Let's just say that she had been around Komani enough to know a lot about him. She knew that he only wanted attention and power, and that was why he fought and bragged and beat.
One morning, Komani was walking down the road to school. He was fourteen and having a rough day. Tatiana walked by his side and didn't speak at all.
Finally, he said, "Tat, I have seen how you look at me once I hurt someone. Why are you always disproving of me?"
"You aren't acting like the nice boy mother and father raised you to be," she responded simply. "I am ashamed to be your twin."
"Well, for being twins we aren't alike at all!" Komani yelled, infuriated by her words.
"No, we are not," Tatiana said, not missing a beat. "I thought you would have noticed that sooner."
Komani huffed angrily, cause he knew if he tried to hurt her then she would tell and he would get in a lot of
trouble. He turned his head and spotted Spider Woods. It was forbidden to enter because of the poisonous spiders that dwelt within it. But the spiders couldn't survive near light so the townspeople had set up torches all along the borders of the forest, caging the spiders during night.
And now, Komani had an idea. "Hey, Tatiana, if you're so special then you will do a dare, right?"
Tatiana turned around for the first time. They were almost to school and some kids had heard what Komani had said. Tatiana was quiet, then said, "What's the dare?"
"Go into Spider Woods and bring me back some of the spiders' webs on a stick. You can bring a light."
Tatiana's eyes widened as she stared at the trees. "I-I could get hurt."
"Not unless your careful," Komani said, smirking. He knew that Tatiana couldn't turn down a dare so easy.
In the evening, Tatiana and Komani stood in front of the woods. "Komi, promise me that if I don't return, you will come find me," she said. Komani nodded. Then, she entered.
It was midnight and Tatiana hadn't returned. Komani hadn't gone home because he had promised to find Tatiana if she didn't return. Komani then realized that
this was the first promise he had ever made. And he wanted to keep it. So he grabbed a lantern.
After minutes of walking, he came upon the spiders main web. And there she was. Tatiana was suspended in a web, holding out the lantern he had given her. Tears were running down her face and she squirmed to get out. Then Komani saw them. Thousands of spiders surrounded the web, waiting to attack his sister once the light ran out. And the candle inside the lantern was dimming considerably.
Komani grabbed a stick and ran forward yelling. He smashed his lantern onto the ground and fire sprang up on
dry forest floor. The light caused the spiders so back up and scurry away. Komani quickly cut his sister out of the web with his stick and she fainted onto him. He picked her up and carried her out of the woods.
He brought her back home where his parents were waiting. Mrs. Koi almost fainted once she heard what had happened. Once Tatiana gained consciousness Mrs. Koi asked her what had happened.
Tatiana met Komani's eyes and said, "I wanted the see if the spiders were real. I was stupid. Komi saved me."
Mr. Koi patted Komani on the back and said, "Well done, son. Me and your mother are proud of you."
That night, Komani thought about the day and found that he regretted every moment. The fight, the dare, Tatiana lying for him. She shouldn't have had to. For the first time in his life Komani realized what a danger he was to everyone. So that night he snuck out and left, the only thing he took with him was his father's hunting knife.
. . . . .
Komani fell to the ground again as he was tripped by Choai(ko-eye).
"You must be able to beat me to become worthy to be in our ranks," Choai said as he pulled him up. "Now get back in form."
Komani got up, drew his arms back, and gained his balance. Choai rushed at him and they battled for a while. But this time, as Choai swept his foot under him to trip him, Komani jumped and landed right on top of it.
Choai yelled and Komani took this advantage. He tripped Choai and his teacher fell with a thud. Somewhere in the large training room, someone clapped.
Komani turned to the man he owed all of his thanks to. The night he had run away he had been attacked by a pack of wolves and, had it not been for Mr. Pilkar, he would have been ripped to pieces.
"I've never seen it done like that before," Jaxon Pilkar
