Chapter one the commanders
I could here the crowd screaming they were up on their feet clapping and cheering same story as always I said to myself I took a deep breath and said okay let's do this I got onto the two boards and wrapped my hands around the metal handle attached by a wire to the boat I squeezed my hands together tightly and nodded to the driver.
The boat zoomed off I had no time to use my earth mind I now had to use my water mind when I ever said this to anyone else they would call me crazy but honestly it's true there's a time to connect to the earth and a time to be in flow with the water so right now I needed to be in flow with the ocean I had always loved water skiing I had started skiing when I was little when my dad use to teach me.
Now I was competing not just competing racing I knew that I would always win the skiing races or really anything to do with skiing I would win and I'm not saying that to sound prideful I'm saying that because everyone else is a commander they force the water to do what they want they give it no respect and if the water has no respect it will become angry and that means it will not help any other skiers that are trying to race.
The only other person I knew that might have been able to ski as well or maybe even better than me was my father and my mother they use to race to they taught me that no matter what anyone said they told me to always listen for the smallest whisper and it would tell me how to ski so I had and then I had felt the water push me onto a wave it was thr biggest wave I'd ever encountered in a race not the biggest wave I'd ever seen just the biggest one in a race it lifted me so high that I could almost make out the finish line and then I saw her.
She was almost as tall as me she looked about fourteen and then I realized that she wasn't commanding the water like the others she was trying to listen to it but without help it's almost impossible to hear it I sighed and thanked the water for it's help mahalo iā ʻoe I said then I jumped off the boards and dived into the water I popped up and said hello there the girl jumped back in surprise and fell off her boards sorry I said are you okay?
She got back on her boards and it took her a moment to realize who I was wait are you the so called hula nalu she asked yep that's me I said I think I can help you win this race you can she asked yep I can and why would you do that she asked aren't you about to win I laughed out loud and said I hate these races anyway and I know your not like the nā luna hoʻomalu what are the commander asked the girl oh I call the other skier's commanders because do you see how they push into the water and fight against it their trying to control it your not.
Okay well then what do I do how do I listen to the water like you do paa i kou hanu I said wait why do I need to hold my then I pulled her into the water I turned her around and showed her the coral I took her into it the good thing was their wasn't any water inside the coral I put her hand on the water's surface and said what does it feel like it feels smooth she said yes good what else it feels like it vibrating now put your ear to the water and focus whoa the water just said something it talked yep I said then I put her back on her boards and said good luck then I whispered to the water hoʻouna i kāna laki send luck I whispered
I got back onto my boards with a little swim with the water and told my boat driver to pull over ke ʻae nei mākou e lanakila kekahi i kēia lā then I hoped on the boat and smiled the water was pushing her she was asking for it's help just like I told her to and just like I predicted she won first place she came up to me and said thank you so much I really needed to win this no problem I said but if you want to compete in the championship you'll need to work on those sharp turns
Chapter two The training of ʻānela
Mahalo e kuʻu hoa I said to the water before leaving to go home I nodded to the girl and said I'll see you tomorrow sharp and early at four A.M. sharp and also what's your name mea holo mama the girl looked up and burst out laughing what did you just call me and also my names ʻānela
The next morning I went to the beach at three A.M and got on my boards I started practicing and warming up the first thing I always did was connect to the sea and the creatures in it I stood and the water and slowly lowered myself into it while thinking Aloha kakahiaka e kuʻu hoa and then finally coming back up and I took out a shard of sea glass it was glass that had been ramed and washed and been mauled by the sand many times the color was blue and it was almost see through.
