Meet Jimmy. He is 6 years old and in
kindergarten. Today he came home from school
and asked his mom what would happen to their
house if a huge storm came and ruined the
whole thing.

His mom told him if that happened, their
house would be covered by insurance.
Jimmy looked confused and his mom
started to explain what insurance is.

The first step in getting insurance is buying
a policy. A policy is writing that says
exactly what you're paying for.
When something bad happens, you have to
file a claim. What is a claim? A claim is
asking your company to help pay for the
accident that happened.

There are lots of different types
of insurance! The first kind is
house
insurance. This insurance will
cover damage to our house
and things inside of it. So, Jimmy,
if your favorite blanket gets
ruined by the accident, our
insurance can give us money to
get you a new one.

Now, Jimmy, I know you're clumsy...but
we have insurance that can cover that too!
That insurance is called health insurance. It
gives us money to pay for injuries or when
you're sick.

One of the most important kinds of
insurance is auto insurance. This protects
people when they get in car accidents and
get hurts. Even though you're allowed to
decide if you want car insurance or not, it
is a law to have a certain kind of insurance
that is called liability insurance.

Liability insurance is important when you
get in an accident. It protects pedestrians,
other cars, or passengers in your car when
you damage them.

What happens if someone hits you and
they don't have insurance? Don't worry.
Your insurance policy will pay the money
that the person who hit you can't pay.
Buying medical expense coverage when
you start driving is important too. It covers
injuries that happen from automobile
accidents. So if you hurt yourself, you're
covered by this.

People get hurt from things
other than car accidents also.
If you fall from the swing and
break your arm, then what
happens? There is insurance
for that too!
