Leonardo da Vinci was born in Italy in 1452. Most people refer to him as da Vinci, but in fact, da Vinci isn't his surname. He was actually an illegitimate child, so he had no surname. Vinci was the name of the place he was born in. Altogether, his name means Leonardo born in Vinci.

After his birth, Leonardo was raised by his father who was a famous aristocrat and was highly respected. Despite this, he was never able to receive proper education. Not until his father accidentally discovered Leonardo's remarkable talent for art was he granted the opportunity to be apprenticed to a well-known artist at that time.

One day, his teacher was given a job to paint Baptism of Christ. Since the workload was too large, his teacher had several students assist him in painting it, one of whom was Leonardo. He was asked to paint the angel on the left. The angel he drew was a lot different from the rest of the figures in the painting. There's glare which cannot be seen in others' in the angel's eyes. Besides, every detail was beautifully and carefully painted. Because of this, his teacher was so frustrated that he swore never to paint again.

Later on in Leonardo's life, he drew several paintings that have been passed down generations after generations, including The Last Supper, Vitruvian Man and the most famous of all, the Mona Lisa. Those paintings remain some of the human beings' greatest treasure even after centuries of his death.

Some say that there are hidden messages behind each of Leonardo's works. For instance, if you put bread in the hand of each figure from The Last Supper, the bread in their hands, along with the bread on the table, creates a piece of music. A note in this piece of music is out of tune. That's exactly where Judas, the betrayer, was. A possible guess is that Leonardo was trying to use this way to illustrate who the betrayer was.

Another example is the beloved Mona Lisa. The identity of the woman in the painting remains unknown to this day. Experts all over the world have been trying hard to find out her identity. They discovered that beneath the painting lies the name of Leonardo's mother, who he had never seen after birth. Hence, some speculate that Mona Lisa may be Leonardo's mother. If you look closer into the painting, you may find that the woman actually bears a striking resemblance with Leonardo himself. Thus, others say that the woman may actually be the female version of Leonardo.
