It was an exciting day at school. Today was the day for football sign up and
Johnny couldn't wait to find his friend, Kaisei so they could sign up together.
Johnny loved hanging out with his friend at school and what an even better
way to be with his friend and share what Johnny loved to do best, play football!

After I found my friend, I asked him to come sign up with me. Kasei said his
parents would not let him play football. I asked why not. He wasn't sure,
but he would ask his mom when he got home from school.

After school, Kasei went home to ask his mom why he couldn't play
sports. His mom said, "Kaisei, in our culture it is more important for you
to concentrate on your studies than to play sports. It is important for
you to train your mind intellectually. We want you to be very successful
in life". Kaisei walked away feeling very sad. He understood his mom,
but felt like he was disappointing his friend, Johnny.

The next day, Johnny couldn't wait to find Kaisei to see what his mom
said. When he found him, Kaisei explained why it was important for his
parents that he not play sports and concentrate more intellectual
activities. Of course, this made Johnny very sad.

After football practice that afternoon, Johnny went home to explain to
his mom what had happened. Johnny's mom explained that there are
many different cultures with different beliefs and disciplines. It doesn't
mean that Kaisei's parents were hard on him for not allowing him to
play sports. It just meant that they loved him and wanted the best for
him.

The next morning at school, Johnny tells Kaisei that he now
understands why his mother will not allow him to play football. He then
got an idea. He remembered seeing a poster on the cafeteria door
asking for students interested in chess. There was a chess club forming
for a National Chess Tournament. Maybe Kaisei's mom would let him be
a part of this intellectual "sporting" event. It was worth a try.

Kaisei couldn't wait to get home that day from school to ask his mom.
Kaisei waited until after dinner that evening and asked his parents what
they thought. They were happy to hear Kaisei was so interested in such
a challenging game. They agreed this was intellectually stimulating and
they would support him.

The next morning at school Kaisei couldn't wait to tell Johnny his
exciting news. There first class together, Kaisei excitedly explained to
Johnny he could join the chess club and would love for Johnny to be a
part of his team. Johnny accepted but only on the condition that he
teach him how to play chess.

Kaisei and Johnny learned so much about each others cultures over the
course of the school year and learned to appreciate the differences.
