Miyamizu Mitsuha – a female living in the Japanese countryside, bored with the present life and always looking forward to living in Tokyo.
Tachibana Taki - a boy in Tokyo who works part-time at an Italian restaurant after school, loves to draw and is interested in architecture.
The two have been having strange dreams since the legendary comet Tiamat appeared in the sky. In the dream, Mitsuha dreams of being a boy from Tokyo and Taki dreams of being a girl from the Japanese countryside. And they quickly realized they had been swapped bodies. To avoid trouble, they leave each other messages, rules telling the other not to do anything. Things went on and on, until the evening when the comet passed and parted, falling to Japan, from which Taki discovered that he and Mitsuha were no longer interchangeable.

Based on what he remembered when he was in Mitsuha's form, Taki drew a picture of the countryside where Mitsuha lived. He and his two friends Tsukasa and Okudera set out to find their dream.
Since there was no data other than the picture Taki drew, they could not find the place. Fortunately, while resting in the Ramen shop, someone recognized the town by the lake in the picture as Itomori - where 3 years ago there was a meteorite crash that killed more than 500 people, which also means Mitsuha is no more.
When he arrived, Itomori was in ruins, next to a lake and a giant meteor crater. That night, Taki realized that he had forgotten Mitsuha's name, and Mitsuha's diary entries and notes also disappeared from the phone. He also didn't remember why he had a bracelet made of chains that he still wears as a talisman.

Mitsuha and Taki's time is 3 years apart. The reason Taki had the bracelet was that 3 years ago (Mitsuha's time, ie 2013), Mitsuha took a train to Tokyo to meet Taki, but at that time, because Taki didn't know her, he didn't know who she was. Mitsuha sadly got off the train, Taki called out: "What's your name?", Mitsuha pulled out the hair tie, giving it to Taki, "I'm Mitsuha". Taki used that string as a bracelet and wore it for 3 years.
The next morning, Taki left a message for two friends and went alone to the small shrine located in a cave, where he was led by Mitsuha's grandmother to offer the god kuchikamizake what she said was "" part of Mitsuha's body was in it." In the cave, Taki found a bottle of Mitsuha's kuchikamizake covered with moss, opened the cap and took a sip. Immediately, Taki sees all of Mitsuha's memories from when she was born, then the two are switched again, Taki transforms into Mitsuha three years ago.

Taki is told by Mitsuha's grandmother that both Mitsuha's grandmother and mother have experienced dreams of becoming someone, all of the Miyamizu family members who take over the Miyamizu shrine have this ability. In order to save the people of Itomori town from a meteor disaster, Taki (in Mitsuha's form) and Mitsuha's two friends Sayaka and Teshi make a plan to evacuate everyone to safety, however the plan falls apart when his father by Mitsuha discovered and prevented.
Taki (in Mitsuha's body) runs to the cave where Mitsuha (in Taki's body) is (at the present time, ie 2016). Taki and Mitsuha meet, their bodies switch back. In order not to forget each other, they wrote their names on each other's hands, but instead of writing their own, Taki wrote "I LOVE YOU". Taki finished writing, but as soon as Mitsuha picked up the pen, she immediately went back in time, the pen fell to the ground. Once again, Mitsuha's name quickly vanished from Taki's mind.
