Prologue:
My story begins far, far away from civilization, where a snowy mountain peak holds an abandoned monastery and an elven family.
It was evening when my younger sister and I were practicing with our bows and dual short swords. Father was watching us from the entrance of the temple.
“Good job, you two,” he praised happily.
“You try, Papa!” I said.
“Yes, Papa! You try, you try!” My sister said, handing our father her bow. Father gave a deep, delighted laugh as he took his own bow that rested on the steps. He drew the string back on the bow, and shot the arrow, and it hit the middle of the target. My mouth fell open in amazement.
“You do it so easily!” I commented. My sister just stared at it, like she had no words to describe it, with her eyes shining.
“Arctic! Snow! Come here!” Their mother called from inside. At the sound of my name, I automatically raced inside, followed by my sister. I
found my mother in the built-in kitchen.
“Are you guys hungry for food? How about you, Arctic?” Mother asked.
“Yes, please!” I answered, taking a brush from the table and started to brush my white hair.
“Papa’s amazing with the bow! He hit the center!” Snow told their mother, she laughed.
“You’ve been practicing, I presume?” Snow and I nodded, sitting down at the table. Father came in, and sat with us, along with mother. Then, they started eating dinner, telling stories and laughing.
Years later, the elven family were still thriving. Snow and I were playing checkers together late in the evening. After a while, our parents came in, with a man. I straightened up.
“What’s this man doing here?” Snow asked.
“As you know, there’s a blizzard outside, and he’ll be staying with us until it’s over,” Mother explained. I nodded.
That night, we were sleeping peacefully in our beds. After a few minutes, I opened my eyes. I saw that I was in the basement of the
temple, which was my room. I heard sounds coming from upstairs. I quietly went, trying not to wake my sister who was sleeping next to me, and opened the latch that was leading upstairs. I opened it enough so I could carefully look around. I then saw something that horrified me to the core. I saw mother and father laying there, with blood on them, and the man was next to them. Mother! Father! The man transformed into some kind of demon. I felt anger surge through my body. Demon? That’s why he didn’t look right, when he came along! We’ve got to go…I thought, I closed the thing, locked the hatch very quietly. And I went up to Snow. I shook her, until she woke up. She turned to me, while laying down.
“What is it, Arctic?” She asked.
“Shh, be quiet. Mother and Papa wanted us to go through the stairs and down the mountain,” I explained in a whisper, and as I did, my heart welled in sadness.
“Why?”
“I’ll explain on the way. Hurry up!” And with that, Snow got up, and went over and opened the door on the ground and went through. I went
through, also. There was a flight of stairs that led down the snowy mountain. As I followed my sister, a tear ran down my cheek. We managed to get safely down the mountain, and out. Snow turned around.
“Could you please tell me what’s happening?” I looked at her, and took a deep breath. As I did, I made an oath to find and hunt down the demon, and kill it.
Chapter one: Cranberg
Most people would call us the mysterious twins. Yes, we are twins, but not that mysterious. We sat in a town called Cranberg, on a clear night. The town was famous for its jam, jellies, pies and cranberries. It was also their harvest festival. There were a lot of festivities going on. There was a play, doing a reenactment called, “The Mice.” and it was a group from long ago, or something, I didn’t really know. I was not watching the play, I was in a crowd of people who were. I was sitting and reading my book, deep in concentration, I sometimes would look up to see if my sister was alright.
My sister’s name was Snow, and mine was Arctic. We were not only twins, but we were identical twins, which meant we looked exactly the same. We both had deep blue eyes, long pure white hair, and peachy skin. My sister was sitting next to me, eating food, and watching the play.
I looked up a little bit after I was reading my book, and looked around. Snow was there, but I perceived something else too. There was a dwarf
sitting down, and I noticed a thief going up to the dwarf slowly, quietly, and stealthily to try to pickpocket him. I tapped Snow lightly on the shoulder. She looked at me with a questioning look. I silently pointed over to the dwarf, without saying a word. She knew what I meant, as if I was saying; lets go sit over there, to make sure the thief doesn’t pickpocket. Snow and I got up, and went and sat beside the dwarf. I saw that the thief backed up. The dwarf seemed to notice us, as he merely gave a grunt. I felt Snow touch me on the shoulder, and heard her say in a whisper, “The Mayor is speaking.” And she was correct, there was a guy who came out, and he started speaking.
“I’m glad this was a glorious day,” The mayor began.
“Let us feast on our delicious food that everyone prepared for tonight.”
“Today we shall honor Lord Bernard Turkey, who couldn’t be here tonight because he sadly got ill,” He said.
“Huzzah! Let–” Before the mayor could continue, a javelin pierced him, right through his chest, and he collapsed to the floor. There were goblins who showed up, and some kind of devil. The devil said in Infernal, “For
the sixth spire!” and all of the goblins charged.
I was lost for words. Where did that come from?! I quickly stood up, so did Snow. I could see that there were a variety of goblins around. Snow grabbed her bow, and shot the goblin closest, I backed her up and did the same. We kept shooting it until it died.
We then did the same to another goblin. I looked around the crowd of people, and saw there was a devil of some sort. I peered at it closely, seeing if it was that same demon from a while back…it wasn’t. That isn’t the same demon who killed mother and Papa…I recognized it as a bearded devil.
I then shot another goblin that my sister was shooting, till it was dead. I saw a guy walk up to us.
“Hi! What’s your name?” He asked my sister.
“Why do you care?” She asked.
“It’s chaos out here!” She added in an exclamation. I looked at the guy.
“Are you one of them?” I asked carefully.
“One of what?”
“One of the bad guys?”
“No, I’m not,” The guy replied. I looked at him closely. He does look like an idiot,,,But I can trust him, I thought.
The guy then hid under a table that we were next to. He sure is a weirdo. I quickly caught something in the sky, it had wings, and it was flying away.
Then, I looked more closely, and saw that it was holding a woman in its claws. I loaded up another arrow, and carefully aimed it towards the flying thing, and I shot it, it flew fast and hit the thing in the wing. I started to run forward, so I could hit it more clearly.
I got stopped shortly after, by the bearded devil. Snow came by my side, and shot it in the face, I did so too. It flew in between us and shot a beam at both of us. I got knocked to the ground. I got up to my feet, and shot the thing again. It looked at me, and laughed pulling out the arrows like it was nothing. It shot a beam again, hitting the both of us. I then saw an arrow fly by me, and hit Snow in the side. She fell to the ground, barely breathing. I widened my eyes. The devil looked at me, and said in Infernal
language, “We shall meet again, young elf,” and then it flew away, with something in its hands. I tried to shoot it, but I missed, I saw a couple others try to shoot it as well. I fell to the ground, unable to really support myself. I looked over and saw my sister, her eyes were closed.
“Snow!” I exclaimed. I slowly made my way over to her, as I did a person–a girl, came over and sat beside her. She started chanting or something. I ignored the pain, and got up to my feet slowly. A moment later, Snow opened her eyes, and sat up, and stood up. I looked at her, and gave her a hug. Afterwards, she started to patch up her wounds. A man came up, and looked at me.
“So, I noticed that the demon was speaking to you, does that mean you know the language it spoke, by any chance?” The man asked. He looked just like a normal human, and he had a black beard.
“Are you a demon?” I asked. The man just stared, with a confusing look on his face.
“Is this really a question?” He asked.
“Yes, please answer. Are. You. A. Bad. Guy?” I spoke slowly.
“No, I’m one of the good guys.” I looked at him carefully. And I could tell he was a good man.
“Good, then in that case…I do speak infernal,” I replied to his question.
“Hmm…I do not know a lot about demons…” He looked deep in thought. The woman who was flying away with the thing earlier, came up, also. She gave a slight bow of gratitude to the bearded man.
“Thank you again, for saving me,” She said. I raised my eyebrow slightly. Hmm. He saved you then, that’s good.
“Oh, you're welcome,” The bearded man said.
“I want to hire you five, to go hunt down that demon. I can pay you if you do, how does ten thousand sound to you?” The lady said.
“I’m in,” the man agreed a second later.
“Me too!” The girl said, nodding her head.
“Me three.”
“Uhh–” I hesitated for a moment. I looked at Snow, she did the same.
“Can I just talk to my sister for one second?”
“Take your time.” Snow and I broke off from the little group of people.
I leaned forward to my sister.
“Are we going? I mean, we already have our own quest to go on,” I whispered.
“I know…But if we go, we could maybe interrogate the demon, on where that other one is. And plus, we’ll get money, and we need that,” Snow pointed out.
“True. Fine, we can go,” Snow and I turned around and made our way back to the group.
“We’re in,” I announced.
“Goody!” The girl said, and as she did, I noticed that she had purple hair. The dwarf from before came up, and had a cup in his hand.
“What a fine battle that was!” He cheered, and took a drink from his cup.
“You guys need a place to stay, I’m guessing? Well, you can stay at my inn," he offered. How do you say thank you in his language again…Come on, Arctic, you know this! It’s so easy! I thought for a moment. Then I got it.
“Anket tho,” I said in dwarvish. The dwarf seemed surprised.
“Now look at this young elf, learning our language! And the best language there is!” He exclaimed.
“And for that, you get half off for your room, for the first night.” Everybody seemed happy about that. The girl with purple hair did a performance, and then we got another half off for the room.
“Oh, my name is Thornrick, thought you should know,” The dwarf said. I smiled.
Chapter two: Silver shop and contracts
The same day that we almost had died from the bearded devil, Thornrick, the dwarf we had met, and the innkeeper, had told us about a silvers shop and had given us the directions for it, so we were on our way right now. When we got there, I saw a sign that read; Sally’s silversmiths silver shop. We walked inside the building, but before we did, I heard banging from inside. Once we went inside, I saw a halfling coming up to us.
“Hello, can I help you with anything? Do you need your weapons made into silver?” They asked. The man with the beard, whom I never caught the name of, thought for a moment.
“Uh, yes, maybe my War Hammer,” He said, taking out his big hammer.
“Oh, yes, of course, just give it to me and I’ll make sure it’ll get handled,” She said. I thought for a moment.
“We already have silver weapons if you want them, at all.”
“Are there daggers?” Snow asked. The person nodded.
“I’ll take one,” Snow said.
“Ohh, me too!” I said. The halfling handed us two silver daggers. I smiled, while holding up the knife, seeing it shine from the light. Nobody wanted anything else.
“Oh. . .The weapons you left here might take a bit longer to do, because we’re out of silver at the moment,” The halfling explained, while putting the tools on the table.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, the people who usually bring it here, they hadn’t been doing it. I mean, the people come out to do it, but they get stopped by something, we’ve been trying to get a hold of them for weeks but they haven’t answered at all,” She explained. Snow and I looked at each other, with worried looks.
“So, in that case, we were going to ask you guys to go take care of the guy for us, who’s been giving us trouble. We already know that you guys are on your own quest, but it would help out a lot.”
“Sure, we’re in, we are happy to help,” Me and Snow said together. The
others nodded in agreement.
“Great, make sure to look for a guy by the name Gerald, you should check by the docks.” We all nodded once the halfling was done explaining. As I was walking out of the shop with everyone else, I saw something flying down to me. I saw a white owl swoop down and perched itself on my shoulder.
“Hi Sequoia, how was your hunt?” I asked him.
“It was very good!” He responded. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that I have a pet owl. His name was Sequoia, call him Koi for short. He was a white snowy owl, with big amber eyes, and red flecks in his white feathers. I’m the only one to talk to him, right now, because the others can’t.
“Hello, Koi. How is he?” Snow asked me.
“He’s doing good, he had a very good hunt,” I replied. I pet the owl, and he gave a happy chirp. We had then all agreed to go check what’s going on with the silver the next day.
That night, we were at the inn, where we were drinking juices. I had
gotten apple juice.
“So. . .Who are you guys?” I asked the others.
“Yeah, what are you’re guy’s names, anyways?” Snow repeated my question. The man with the black beard widened his eyes.
“You don’t know me?”
“No, that's why we asked,” I said.
“Well, my name is Sturgor,” The man with the black beard introduced himself. Snow and I changed our glance toward the next guy.
“And, how about you, Table Guy?” Snow asked.
“Huh? What did you call me?” Table guy asked.
“Table guy. You know, because you hid under a table?”
“Well, we were all supposed to do that, what if we all died!” He asked.
“Excuse me,” Snow said sharply, “Who comes up in the middle of complete chaos, asks a random person their name, and then hides under a table?”
“Just answer, please. What is your name?” I asked sharply.
“My name is Malwyn. Malwyn Turkey.” He replied finally, he gave a grin
afterwards.
“Turkey. Turkey. Turkey. Turkey. Turkey,” Me and Snow said quietly to each other fast.
“I feel like I heard that name from somewhere,” Snow commented to me.
“Where though?” I asked. Snow thought for a moment.
“Oh! I know where!”
“Where?”
“From the play, right? It was playing, and it said something about him. I wasn’t watching, yes, but I was listening,” I said. Snow clapped her hands together in a sign of agreement.
“You’re so smart!” She said, as I gave a smile.
“Actually,” Malwyn interrupted.
“That was my father. You know, the lord of these lands? The one who saved earth from eternal destruction?” Malwyn asked us. Snow and I looked at each other, then shook our heads in disagreement.
“Nope, we never heard of him,” Snow said, shrugging her shoulders. He
gave a sigh.
“Wait, I didn’t mean to overhear, but you didn’t know?” Thornrick came up and asked. We shook our heads.
“And, how about you?” I turned my head to the purple haired girl. The girl gave a nice smile.
“My name is Luna Turkey,” She said, looking excited.
“Weren’t you in the play?” Snow asked, she nodded her head.
“Wait,” Thornrick interrupted.
“There was a young girl called Luna Turkey, after the battle with the Bone Devil, she set off on her own. One day she mysteriously vanished, some said in a different dimension, and she was never found again, but that was four years ago. So…That’s you?” Thornrick explained.
“Yup, that’s me! I did traveled to a different dimension, and got stuck there,” Luna explained. I opened my mouth slightly in shock.
The next day, we were all walking out of the inn, and to Stourgoar’s cart that he had. Before we went in, I pet Sequoia who was perched
onto my shoulder.
“Could you go ahead and check the docks, please?” I asked. He obeyed, and soared up into the sky and flew off. We all gotten into Sturgor cart, which had a black horse at the end of it. I sat at the edge, next to Snow, but as far away as I could from Malwyn.
I didn’t like elves, I hated them, except for my family, you might ask why since I’m an elf too; A while back, my parents had gotten kicked out of a village by a group of elves.
We rode in the cart, as the horse was pulling, the light reflecting off its black hair.
After a little bit, we had gotten to a passage through the town. I saw three men up ahead, and they didn’t seem like those kinds of guys who you need to pay to continue riding. As we rode closer I hid in the cart using my surroundings.
I noticed that one of the three guys was the pickpocketing thief who tried to rob Thornrick. In the corner of my eye, I saw Sturgor silently jump out of the cart, after he did, the cart kept moving.
I watched through the entrance of the cart, and I didn’t see anything. I moved, and as I did, the wagon moved faster, making me stumble and fall to the ground. Once the wagon stopped moving, I made my way out of it. I grabbed my bow, nock it up with an arrow, and tried to shoot one of the guys.
I pulled back the string, and shot the arrow, it flew past and missed the guy. I then shot another arrow, and as I did the sun had gotten in my eyes and I missed again.
I then saw a guy fly above me, and crash onto the ground dead. After a few minutes, I looked up and saw that all the men were dead, except for one, who was surrounded by my sister and the others. I walked over to them, and as I was getting closer to them, I realized the man who lived was the pickpocketing thief.
“Please! Spare me!” The thief begged.
“And why should we?”
“I didn’t mean to attack you! I was given a job!” Sturgor thought for a moment.
