Art is something that is created with imagination. An artist is
the person who creates the art. A Chicana is a woman who
describes herself as an American of Mexican descent. There are
many talented Chicanas who create different kinds of art.

Geography Tip: The United States and Mexico share a border that
is 1,933 miles long.
El Arte es algo que se crea con la imaginacíon. Un artista es la
persona que crea arte. Una Chicana es una mujer que se describe
como un norteamericano de ascendencia Mexicana. Hay muchas
Chicanas talentosas que crean diferentes tipos del arte.

Punta de la geografia: Los Estados Unidos y México comparten una frontera que es
1,933 millas de largo.
Examples of art are painting, drawing,
sculpture, and photography. These are called
mediums. Artists use many different types
of mediums, including paint, clay, stone,
fabric and paper.
Art expresses ideas or feelings, tells a story
or can be something useful. When you look
at art you see lines, colors, shapes, texture
and space. These parts are called the
elements of art. When you look at art, look
for what the piece is about. This is called
the subject.
What are
some other
things you
can use to
make art?
Algunos ejemplos de arte son pinturas,
dibujos, esculturas y fotographías. Estos son
diferentes medios. Los artistas utilizan
diferentes tipos de medios, incluyendo
pintura, arcilla, piedra, tela y papel.
El arte expresa ideas o sentimientos, cuenta
una historia o puede ser algo útil. Cuando
miras arte ves líneas, colores, formas,
textura y espacio. Estas partes se llaman
elementos de arte. Cuando mira el arte
buscan sobre qué la pieza es. Esto se llama el
sujeto.

Where is Art?
You can find art in many places. One of these
places is a museum. A museum is a place where
art is kept for people to see. The curator is the
person in charge of the museum. She takes care
of all the artwork in the museum. She acquires
the objects and teaches visitors about the
displays on view. A curator goes to college to
study and is very knowledgeable about art.
¿Dónde es el Arte?
Puedes encontrar arte en muchos lugares. Uno de
estos lugares es un museo. Un museo es un lugar
donde el arte se mantiene para que la gente puede
ver. El curador es aquella persona que cuida el
museo. Ella se encarga de todas las orbas de arte
del museo. Ella adquiere los objetos y enseña a los
visitantes acerca de las muestras de arte. Un
curador va a la universidad a estudiar y está muy

Painting
Painting is artwork created by using a brush to apply various paints to a
surface. Painting can be done on any kind of surface. Canvas is a strong,
woven fabric which is most commonly used by painters.
Santa Barazza is a painter from Kingsville,
Texas. Her family did not have much money
when she was a child so she entertained
herself by drawing and sketching. She uses
bright colors and symbols in her paintings. A
symbol is a letter, sign, or picture that
expresses a bigger meaning. Color is used to
express meaning, too. She likes to paint images
that remind her of the Texas landscape,
especially the maguey plant and hearts.

La pintura es obra de arte creada utilizando un pincel para aplicar varias pinturas
a una superficie. La pintura se puede hacer en cualquier tipo de superficie. La lona
es una tela tejida fuerte que es la más frecuentemente usada por los pintores.
Santa Barazza es una pintora de Kingsville,
Texas. Su familia no tenía mucho dinero
cuando era una niña, por tanto se entretuvo
dibujando y haciendo bosquejos. Ella utiliza
colores brillantes y símbolos en sus pinturas.
Un símbolo es una letra, signo o imagen que
expresa un significado más grande. El color
es usado para expresar el sentido también.
Le gusta pintar imágenes que le requerdan
del paisaje de Texas sobre todo la planta
maguey y corazones.
This painting is called "Mano Poderosa." To Santa, the heart stands
for a woman’s strength. If you look closely you will see ancient Aztec
symbols which represent her native culture. She uses lots of bright
colors to show elements of nature, power and connect to her family
roots.
Geography Tip: Kingsville is located in
southTexas. Do you know someone
from South Texas?
Esta pintura se llama “El Mano Poderosa.” A Santa, el corazón
significa la fuerza de la mujer. Si te fijas bien verás antiguos
símbolos aztecas que representan su cultura nativa. Ella usa un
montón de colores brillantes para mostrar elementos de la
naturaleza, poder y unirse con sus raíces de familia.

Etching
Etching creates a picture by putting ink on a grooved piece of metal
and then pressing paper against the metal.
Ester Hernandez was born in the Sierra Nevada
Mountains in California. She is an etcher who
uses icons in almost all her work. An icon is a
symbol of a person or thing. As a child, she
explored the organic materials around her to
create art. She used soft clay and sandy earth
to make her first creations. Her family was very
creative and taught her to have pride in her
community and of her Chicana heritage.

Un grabado de aguafuerte crea una imagen utilizando tinta que se mete
en los surcos de una plancha despues depresión la plancha sobre papel.
Ester Hernández nació en las montañas de
Sierra Nevada en California. Ella es un
grabador que utiliza iconos en casi toda su
obra. Un icono es un símbolo de una persona or
cosa. Cuando era una niña exploró los
materiales orgánicos alrededor de ella para
crear el arte. Usó la arcilla suave y la tierra

Ester was inspired by the Statue of
Liberty in New York City. She made
this etching to describe freedom
from a Chicana’s point of view.
“Libertada” is an icon who tells the
story of the Aztec and Mexican
people.
Geography Tip: Sierra Nevada is
located in California. That is in the
western United States.
Ester fue inspirada por la Estatua de Libertad
en Ciudad de Nueva York. Ella hizo esta
aguafuetrte para describer la libertad desde
el punto de vista de Chicana. “Libertada” es un
icono que dice la historia del pueblo Azteca y
Mexicano.

localizado en el oeste de Estados
Unidos.
Digital Photography
Digital photography uses a camera to capture a picture and save it on a computer
file. The image can be processed on the computer for viewing or printing.
Alma López is a photographer who
was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa,
Mexico and raised in Los Angeles,
California. She has won awards and
is called the ”Digital Diva” for her
work in digital photography. Alma
combines photography and painting
to create original images.

La fotographía digital usa una cámara para capturer una imagen y guardarla en
un archivo de computadora. La imagen puede ser procesada en la computadora
para ver or imprimir.

nació en Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico

Ella ha ganado premios y dicen que
ella es la “Diva Digital” por su trabajo
en fotografía digital. Alma combina la
fotografía y la pintura para crear
imagines originales.
